Hello Gurus, I used copper gaskets on my 509 with a 871 that I now know shouldent have. They leak and I need to know what to replace them with. Heads and block are not machined for O-rings, only plan on 5lbs. this summer maybe 8ish later on max.
8.4 comp.
What should I run thats trouble free?
Thank you!

Superdave013 recommended the gaskets they sell at Clay Smith Cams. I bought some to replace my copper gaskets with. They call them Detroit gaskets. I have not run them yet but am sure they will seal with or without "O" rings.

A bunch of us run FelPro head gaskets with the built in wire ring on our blower boats. All run 8 pounds boost. No problems in a year, knock on wood http://free.***boat.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

Thanks for the responses. Another question would be what type of gasket sealer are you guy using for head and intake? Especialy intake since I cannot properly torque a couple of the bolts.
I just removed intake and it looks like I ran a ton of water through the motor. It has about 1 hour on it including cam break in. Dipstick never looked milky untill the very end of my little test session.
Cam looks great, I don't want to pull the motor to clean it up. I am hoping that maybe I can get away with new lifters and many oil changes in the driveway. Any thoughts?

you didnt say what block u have. markIV genV or genVI . felpro works fine or sce has a new graphite gasket out. 6-8 lbs boost on bbc should be no problem. have 174 blower on bbc in a street truck been together going on 8yrs with 1017-1 felpros no problem. gen 4 uses 1017-1 or 1027 gen5&6 use 1047 no 4.5 bore. for whats it worth.

DEEZ NUTTS, COPPER HEAD GASKETS ARE FROM THE 60'S, YOUR FRIENDS TOLD YOU SUNDAY THAT THEY HAD A B+B O-RING TOOL. USE THIS AND THE PROPER FELPRO HEAD GASKET AND THIS WILL WORK. P.S. DONT TRY TO KEEP UP WITH "BRAD"

Copper head gaskets work great, if everything is done correctly.
I run 12Pds on a 1471 with no leaks to date.

If it makes any difference: I second wideopen545 after dealing with a head gasket problem. If these blow out, you have way bigger problems than head gaskets.

Sorry Don't you have a 28' w.p.m.????
1017 or 1027 may work but to really do it right check the block deck for straightness
an cut the head alittle then o-ring the head and use a 1012 felpro gasket for trouble free fun (unless you have heating and or detonation problems)
MY .01$ WORTH !!
P.S. FOUND THE PAGE BOATFREAKS.ORG. ITS VERY LIBERAL BUT HAS NOT BEEN USED IN AWHILE ,
THANKS

Hey Ambusher there is nothing wrong with copper, a friend of mine was the engine builder on a BAH in the 80's named the Sting driven by a friend named Steve Hess out of Reno, they used copper and did very well with them. Another friend of mine that I help in IHBA (PE #798) uses copper. It seals well if used right & you anneal them after each use. There are other gaskets that do well but the best is copper isn't it? What do the fuel & alcohol guys use these days?

From what I have read one of the best points to the copper gasket is that it is such a good conductor that they draw heat away from the cyl head and into the block. I am still using the same set I bought two years ago. I am not using o-rings but the block has the groove in the top of the cylinders. The copper gaskets have conformed to fit the groove. I match marked the gaskets and put them on the same side everytime. Sealed up w/silicone and 0 water leaks.

HEY GNARLEY, I'VE BEEN RUNNING TAH SINCE 78
AND THE TOP FUEL AND TAH EITHER DON'T RUN WATER OR FILL THE BLOCK AND DRAIN AFTER EACH PASS !SO WATER LEAKS ARE NOT A PROBLEM . ALSO WE ONLY RUN 1/4 MILE ,,AND WITH ALCOHOL
IS ALOT COOLER AND MORE FORGIVING THAN GAS ,
YES WE HAVE MORE CYLINDER PRESSURE BUT ,,WAS HE (DEEZ_NUTS) LEAKING WATER AND COMPRESSION ??????????????????? OR JUST WATER AS HE SAID ,,
HARD TO GIVE A GOOD ANSWER WITHOUT KNOWING ???
WE CAN ALL SAY WHAT WORKS IN OUR GIVEN APP.
AND GO BACK AND FORTH ALL DAY ..THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT IS THE FEL-PRO OR COMP.TYPE GASKET IS FAR AND ABOVE MORE WIDLY USED FOR BLOWN PLEASURE BOATS AND CARS NOW THAN COPPER,PERIOD !! JUST LOOK AT THE RESPONSES HERE ALONE !!
COPPER DOES HAVE ITS PLACE (SMALL THOUGH IT IS ) AND WORKS FOR SOME THAT PUT HRS AND HRS ON THEIR MOTORS BETWEEN TEAR DOWNS .
JUST USE THE 1017 OR 1027 THATS PROVEN AND RIDE .
AGAIN AS A RACER AND ENGINE (MARINE)BUILDER BY TRADE THIS IS ONLY MY .01$ WORTH ,JUST TRYING TO HELP ,AS EVERYONE

Ambusher, thanks for the input. I forgot that the big guys didn't drain, Ive been away from most of it for a while now. As for the newer felpro's, good input for me to as I am going to rebuild mine in the fall. I back you up they all have a particular application & need. What got me started was when you said from the sixties. I was around and going to the Drags in Fremont then as a kid & that made me feel old.

Gnarley, I wasn't trying to get anybody going and as far as being old I was at the drags in the 60's when I was a child also so I know what its like to be old. Really the 1012 felpro with the head o-ringed using the B+B tool is for the most part fool proof as felpro designed this gasket for this app. Let me know if you need help finding somewhere to get this done as it is a very easy process, Have a good one

I use copper headgaskets on all Blown motors I build. Isky makes a O ring hand tool and it works great. Use Ultra blue silicone seal around all water holes and bolt/stud threads and coppers do fine with water. SCE seems to have the best copper head gaskets for the price.
