My dad allways said they were broke-in after the first quarter mile. http://free.***boat.net/ubb/tongue.gif But I would imagine if you had a boost gauge and knew where your safe zone was you should be safe in around an hour or so.

How would they do it on a dyno? Change your oil alot.

My theory is, break in the cam for 20-30 minutes of never at the same RPM running, including idle, change the oil, and drop the hammer. It is never going to run as well as when new, and once the rings are seated, should be stellar. The blower doesn't really change anything.

Froggy's right. The only thing that takes longer than 35-40 seconds to break in is the cam. 30 minutes varying rpm between 1500-2500, then romp on it. Oh yeah, change the oil after the cam breaks in then after a few hours. Otherwise it might make some really expensive noises. After the second oil change, normal intervals. Also, don't use synthetic till the 3rd or 4th oil change. But I would definitely recommend using synthetic eventually. It really does work better.

460 is right. The camshaft ia the only thing that needs to be broken in under no load. Remember, no idle when you break in the new camshaft, even for timing or carb adjustments. Change oil right after the first 30 minutes of running. Then load the engine, that's the only way rings will seat. On the dyno, that's the way we start a new motor and it's obvious that the rings seat properly after a few pulls. We can tell by the motor blow by coming out of the valves covers.

I really apprceiate all the advice. I was just approached with another dilemma.... The builder has suggested i Use the 502 mag in place of the 454. I have heard that the 502 has had both some bottom and top end reliability concerns. Am I setting myself up for a alot of dock sitting if I go this way? http://free.***boat.net/ubb/confused.gif

Look under "502 vs" in this section, a few weeks back. I think there's some info in there (in between the arguing).
