Quick question for the carrera guru's - When did they change from the 205 Elite to the 202 XR and what is the difference if there are any? Anyone have a preference between the two? Thanks in advance for any and all help.

rsr, I just bought a 2001 202xr, I personally like the looks of the cab forward design, the 202 is cab forward the 205 isn't, the 202 comes with the back to back (can't think of the word for it) driver passenger seats the 205 doesn't. I think that is about it in difference, at least that is what I could tell in my ventures.

Both boats use the same bottom. The only difference is the deck. The 205 is a little faster due to less weight toward the bow and a little lower freeboard

Thanks for the info so far. Has the 202 XR been around for a while? How much difference is the freeboard between the 205 and the 202? Anybody able to compare the ride performance of the 202 vs. say a shockwave skier? Thanks in advance again.

Not much difference in freeboard on a 205 versus a 202. It's apples and oranges between a 202 and a Shockwave, remember any other 21 footer will have a lot more room in the open bow than the Carrera's do. I have six friends with the 205's. They all like them and they get on plane well/fairly quick with a 454/jet. The earliest 202 I've seen is a 91, earliest 205 I've seen is an 87. A stock 454/clean slightly modified pump should put a 205 in the mid to upper 50's for speed.

Thanks for the info it's been a great help. Anyone have any idea what year the power hatch became popular and what year the full hatch replaced the old school doghouse? Thanks

Since I've been looking for a different boat, I've seen 3 carreras with the doghouse and 3 with the full bench seat. The doghouse years were 94, 94, and 92. The full bench years were 96, 92, and 88. I hope this helps.

My buddies 89 202XR had the bench and a lot of pink...:D
I think it depended on what the original purchaser wanted.

Thanks for the info so far guys, it's been alot of help. Hoping to upgrade this winter, get rid of the 18 footer and get the 21 foot carrera. Leaning more towards the 202xr, I definitely like the cab forward design better than the 205. Any other opinions or input on the 202xr or carrera's in general would be appreciated. I've heard some people being kind of negative on the "new" carrera ownership. Just curious what people's thoughts were and when the change occured (what year). Has anyone noticed a difference in the product since the the ownership change? Thanks for any info.

rsr,
where are you located, if you are close to SD I would be happy to let you check mine out and if I make a lake trip soon I would be happy to take you for a ride.
A little on my boat, it is a 2001 with the 380hp 454, the boat is pretty heavy so it rides pretty good, I would guess that top speed is somewhere between 55 and 60 (fast enough for me). It has a fair amount of storage, the only thing I miss from my last boat is a lockable glovebox, I really like the back to back jumpers, you can easily haul 12 peeps if half of them are kids, simply it is a very comfortable boat.

GJB,
Thanks for the offer, might very well take you up on that. FYI - I'm in Anaheim so San Diego is not that far away. Got any pics of your boat, just curious what she looks like. You said you got a 2001, if you don't mind me asking how many hours on it and how much did you get it for? I'm planning on trying to pick one up during the winter months, hoping to get a better deal. The 18 footer is running great right now, no need to jump on something else for the summer, but figured I'd try to get some of my questions answered early. Again, thanks for the info.

Here is a pic of the boat, it really isn't a very good one because it is hooked to my truck in front of my house, I will put up a couple from the river trip we took a few weeks back.
The boat had about 130 hours on it when I got it, I paid middle 20's for it, in my opinion I got a pretty good deal, Ultra's the same year were anywhere from 3 to 6 thousand more and that was with the base 454 with 330hp.

GJB - That is one clean looking ride, would love to see some of your other pics especially the engine compartment. IMO you got a great deal on that boat, especially if it is as clean in person as in the photo. How much of a difference did you notice with the 380HP vs the 330HP (assuming you might have test drove some other carreras in the past with the 330). Thanks for the info and keep the pics coming.

Hey rsr,
Here is a picture of my boat a couple of weekends ago, I don't have any of the engine compartment yet, I will take some this weekend and get them posted.

There are some more pics of it in my gallery in the photo section here at ***boat. The only thing that was a pain on the 202 were the windshields. But a stainless rail would take care of that issue.
GJB have you had it out lately???

This pic was taken just below Picacho, this was our maiden river voyage, we haven't been back out, we were supposed to go this weekend but my drywall guy screwed me when he didn't show up for two days, that put my girls bathroom behind schedule, I need to get their bathroom finished before we can go back out because quite frankly I am tired of sharing with them, girls can be so sloppy...

Is it just me or is the steering wheel on the wrong side compared to most jets? Seems like most jets I've seen in the past, steering wheel is on left hand side like in a car, and on most I/O's the steering wheel is on the right hand side, opposite of car? Just noticed that in the pic. My buddy used to have a carrera jet and the steering wheel was on the lhs, just like a car. Regardless, that is definitely one clean ride, can only hope to find one that nice when I go shopping this winter.

Yeah the steering wheel is on the right side, wrong to some but works ok for me, I talked with a guy at a marine repiar shop in SD and he said he could move it for me for about $1,000.00, if at the end of this season I decide I don't like it I will consider putting in the cash to get it changed. In a response a few posts back you were inquiring about the doghouse or full motor cover, my opinion is that the full engine cover is better, it gives you the bench across that back and allows you a couple more passengers. Just my .02 cents...

Helm on left side is more conducive for foot throttle, helm on right side, better for hand throttle.......at least if you're right handed. :D

I haven't had any problems with the right side helm, I was use to it from the previous not so hot boat.

GJB, Thanks for the info. Does that have the hydraulic hatch or is it manual? Any new pics?

Sorry rsr, I didn't have a chance to get any pics this weekend, I was buried deep in a bathroom remodel and Mandelon didn't offer to come help :D I will get some for you this week.
My engine cover is manual, I would have liked the hydraulic lifts, I may consider adding them at a later date.
