Yeah, my golfing buddies were about a hundred feet away by the time I pinned him down. My cell phone/camera was in the golf cart, so I'm telling them "Gimme my camera!". The answer, of course, was "F*CK YOU!". :D
I had to reach in the cart while watching the snake kinda closely, he was about 18" from my leg. :D :D

We were at the needles part of the river sunday on memorial weekend. We saw that same type of snake swimming across the river by the beach we were at. That was enough of that area so I loaded the boat and we went back to Havasu. They can have the snakes, last thing I want when enjoying the day is to have a snakes head poking out of the water coming at me and all I have is a beer to throw at it. That would be a waste of liquid.

The Sunday of Memorial Day weekend I got a call while driving home from Mead. A kid in my son's scout troop just got bit by a snake. He was walking out side of his appartment next to some bushes in ALTA LOMA...not the "real" desert per se...
Come to find out it was a rattler, probably a western diamond back, and it did leave two very distinct fang marks in his leg. Apparantly, upon scaring an adult rattler, they do strike instinctivly but don't envenomate, because they know they'll never take down or eat something as large as a human. Instead they release just enough to warn you off. Now if you hear the rattle and don't back off, then you're screwed.

They can dive far longer than you or I ever could. However, they would never do it, if there was a person swimming under them. Although I did have a pet python once that would rather hang on to me than swim in the open and she would dive down under water to hang on and ride on me rather than swim herself.:cool:
