I am in the process of buying a 97 stoker 22 sst. It has a evinrude 300xp (stock). I am wondering what the goods and bads of this motor are. What modifications work well with this motor? I was told it runs in the 80's. The motor is pretty much stock. I am buying the boat from my parents and it is very well maintianed and all service has been done by Alan. This will be my first O.B. My current boat is a jet w/ a 460 ford. Any advice or recomendations would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for all the replies.

That is a nice boat. Post a picture or two of it when you get a chance.
Also, check out the attached thread for some information on the V-8 OMC engines. If it has been maintained by Stoker, you should be fine. Enjoy!

I have one also, use the best oil & gas you can get! Don't waste your money on anything cheap and try not to go over 6000 rpm, it will go bye-bye. I'm talking from my last rebuild :D not cheap.......( . )( . )......

IF you have an In at stoker, which you should having all service done there, and having one of there boats, I'd go to John and talk to him directly about set-up, do's and dont's etc. He is GOD w/ those motors and hulls.

Really the only thing that I know bad about these motors is there is so much reciprocating weight, that if it sticks a piston at high rpms it will pull the wrist pin out of the piston or break a rod. I have one that has a new sleeve and a nice hole that had to be welded up.
Alan (racer) is who you need to talk to.

Omc 225 mods
Power heads
Nose cone
Carb relocation
Some porting
Boysen reeds
AV fuel 32 to 1
I did pull a ristpin from the piston once and it was
a disaster,needed a new block.

I had a 19ft Hawaiian with a 468 and a Berkley. I am so glad I now have a GSE Allison with a 2.5 Merc.
