That's what I was wondering. With two safety chains, and good ties downs all around, I'm really surprised at the outcome.

It's an ultra and the safety chains tore loose like rubber bands.
The boat only suffered some surface damage (strong hull), the trailer on the other hand was twisted like a pretzel but usable. He definately needs a new trailer.
Oh- and the jet-o-vator tab was busted off. Took it to our shop, drilled, tapped and repaired it that nite and they were out on the water first thing Saturday morning. Boat ran great all weekend.
The dude got way lucky!!!
A Big thanks to all the people that stopped to help.

Speaking from experience - that does suck! Eight years ago I lost my nut doing 70 on the 91 in Sunday eve traffic (not a pun) but my safety chains held to get me over to side of the road. Tie downs held my boat on while the trailer fishtailed like a MF. Bent my trailer jack and put a tiny dent in my bumper. I'm surprised his chains didn't hold and I'm grateful that nobody was hurt in either situation. Now I drill a hole in the bottom of my shaft and stick a cotter pin thru - and I still check check it every trip.
Hint: If you notice your trailer lights getting dim or flickering, you could have a loose nut - it's a ground in many trailer light applications. Tough lesson.

If that was mine, It would have come off the truck / Trailer upside down. (Murphy's Law was written for me!!!) :(

It had cable safety chains. But for you guys that have cable ones, unlike chains they rot out when they get old so you need to check them.replace if need be.

Ever since my boat came unhitched on I-40 about 10 years ago, I began having the nut tack welded to the ball. This way it will not come unscrewed. Safety chains are a false sense of security, mine snapped immediately.
That is an ugly site. I feel for the guy. Glad everything turned out alright.

A little bit of bearing grease on the ball keeps the trailer tongue from twisting the ball. It works good for boats that have a lot of tongue weight. However in this case it's just bum luck, sorry dude for the crash.
