For those that use a gardner to mow the yard. My father in-law says I am getting ripped off. I pay $80 a month for my house. It takes him and a helper about 20 to 30 minutes a week.

Does he do a good job? It is very hard to find a gardner that is worth anything. Ipay mine $50 a month and he comes once a week (most of the time) any extra maintanence I pay for, fertilizer. broken sprinklers etc...
If you are happy with the service you are getting then you are not getting ripped off.

We pay $100 a month. Winter months I honestly agree we are getting ripped off because the grass doesn't grow!....but in the summer there's alot to do and they usually do a pretty good job, better to pay the $ to have someone else do it then try to find the time to do it ourselves. :D ;)

I pay $60 a month just for the front of the house. I just don't have the time to do yard work (OK, I fricken hate yard work).
To me, it's well worth it.
BTW Mrs Luvnlife,

She forgot to say that you gotta bitch the guys out in spanish for a couple of weeks before they remember to pull the weeds. They love the fertilizer though, like it's gonna make them more money...

I used to do my own, but time off work is too precious. We pay $100 a month, for weekly service. $25 to mow, rake and clean up is pretty cheap in my book. They come every Friday so the yard looks nice for the weekend. The put the clippings in a can and I put it out on Monday mornings.
We do the pruning, and fertilizing...the broken sprinkler heads are usually caused by them.....;) But they are easy for me to fix.

Soooo true!!! I'd love to have that extra $100 in my pocket each month, but finding the time is the hard part, so I find it worth it to pay them for their hard work. :)

I pay 130, but I have a pretty big yard and it is for full service. Mow, edge, blow, trim hedges, bushes, trees, fertilize, repair sprinklers, seasonal cutbacks, pull weeds, pretty much everything.

We have a big lawn, and get charged $65 a month. This includes mow & blow, edging, weeding, and trimming hedges. It takes them about 45 minutes to do my yard. It used to takem me about 2.5 hours a week, without doing any weeding or pruning. I did the math:
2.5 X 4 = 10 hours/month
$65 / 10 = $6.50 an hour
I was paying myself only $6.50 an hour to mow my lawn! It was a no-brainer when I looked at it that way. Oh yeah, he not illegal, and he speaks English only!

Thats what kids are for...20 bucks a week includes.... mowing, edging, poop patrol, feeding animals, and sweeping out garage, making beds, cleaning rooms. costs an extra 5 for truck wash;)

$80 a month. Front and back - about 3,000 sq.ft of grass. Trims the hedges and ground cover that may extend itself over the concrete. Fertilizes occasionally. Weeds some on my slopes. Takes my trash out to the curb if he comes on trash day. Does odd small extra jobs for no charge. Negotiable on larger jobs like repair buried, burst pipes or replanting trees or planting the slope. Deals in cash and when I don't see him for a few months he keeps doing the work until I do see him in person.

The US Department of Agriculture (??) estimates the average cost of raising a child from age 0 to 18 in the U.S is $200,000. Maybe a lot more in SoCal - maybe double that. The figures do not include a college education.
So...if you get 6 good, solid years out of a kid...$200,000 / (6 X 52) = $641/week for that lawn care. (6 years assumes you start them at age 10 and they continue to do it until they get their license and won't do it anymore for "free")
I'll keep my gardner. :D

I pay myself a twelve pack every week to manicure the front and back yards. I very much enjoy the pay.
Then I treat myself to a dip in the cement pond.:D

I pay $40 per month but he mow it every other week. And he fixes sprinklers and hedges the bushes.

my lawn is 20' by 16'. it takes 2 minutes to mow. I would feel ashamed if I didn't mow it myself.
Our lot is small 60 x 100 and very expensive. I need the rest of the land for boat parking.
Houses sell for $430 sq ft around here with that size lot. 1/2 acre plus 2500 st ft house would be $1.5 million.
so my gardening problem is solved.

It amazes me when I see the threads bitching about the infestation of illegal messicans in Cali and yet 90%+ of you are probably paying illegal messicans to mow your yard. I proudly mow my own yard and will as long as I can and oh yeah everything is bigger in Texas including our yards;) If I came upon times where I could not I would consider hiring a neighborhood kid but never an immigrant.
It's not about the time or money, it is the principle behind it. If more people would mow their own lawns, paint their own houses, etc the problem with immigration would decline rapidly:yuk: we have become lazy in this country:mad:

I have twelve acres and no tractor YET.... I begged a neighbor to help and he laughed. I mow 3 acres by hand...... I guess things are different in SO Cal. the way I see it is if you have the money and that's what you want to spend it on then so be it...... Me personaly I would love a house cleaner......... I can mow my own lawns in my bikin with an ice cold corona but there is no fun scrubbing a toilet....
