Easy-Out's have saved me at least a couple thousand dollars, I had the vent tube break off flush on the bottom of my Harley crankcase, and a heater hose fitting on a Jaguar XKE intake manifold, both came out with no trouble or thread damage,
it might be tight working in the boat but it'll get the job done.
Good luck,

spray some penetrating oil on the fitting and even heat with a torch a little, then another shot of penetrating oil. then let the easy-out do its job. you should be fine, but if you feel you need to, get a tap (1/2 pipe thread) and clean the threads out. good luck.
