in general, what kind of rpm does a BBC turn behind a vdrive at cruising speed? I know there are many variables that determine this, but just give me some examples of what different boats, gearing, engines etc turn when you're boat has rolled over onto plane and you are just cruising it across the water. Thanks!

It's a pretty simple question. Think back to the last time you were just driving along in your boat, not racing it. About what rpm was the tach showing?

that's more like it. Thanks SD!
Man that's pretty cool that you could cruise around at that low rpm. Mine won't stay on plane under 2,500 rpm.

lol, that why we always say the jets are running up hill all the time. but they do get to the top quick. All those bolt heads you guys have under your boats don't help either. :D Sorry, you know I had to toss that one in there.
I think my schiada will be moving at a pretty good clip at 3,500.
I'll get it back one of these days. Funny how something can look so good but be all focked up under the gel coat. I'm glad Pat's Fiberglass is doing the bottom.

there you go hijacking my thread. What was wrong with the bottom of your boat SD?

When all the running gear got moved it left an extra prop shaft hole. So when they were going to fill it in they found a bunch of bondo   under the gel coat. It must have been a poorly done repair before I owned it. Needless to say it's getting all ground out and done right this time.

Really Mike, it's not as bad as it sounds. We are putting 32 3/8 bolts counter sunk into stringer washers on the bottom on each side. I hear that's the wizzy set up that the other car boat guys do. Tossing in some button heads for good measure. LMAO

Why do you ask Mikey? What's stirring around in that noggin of yours? Am I seeing a V-drive flat again in your future. You have to admit they are pretty enticing-lots of speed with less power and the right gearing.

Hey HotHallet how's that boat of yours runnin'? We got our Hondo finished and it went 79.3 pretty much out of the box, but I would say there is an easy 5-10mph's left in her after we fine tune it.

Nice, what is powering it?

Ian- My boat is running great. Gets up and scoots for a pump. 78 mph is not to shabby but I am getting V-drive fever. I saw a flat going down the road the other day while at lunch with a co-worker and just the way they sit on the trailer is bad ass. Hope to see you at the river soon and am looking forward to checking out the Hondo.

dmontzsta - the boat is actually my brothers now (my dad and I didn't need another boat) but it has a mild 427. 10:1 compression, mild roller cam, and a pair of 600 vacum sec. carbs. We don't think the carbs are working right, so that is why I think we can squeeze an extra 5-10mph's out of it.
HotHallet - go for it! V-drives are awesome, drop your motor in a good runner bottom and you'll have a kick ass flatbottom (not that your Hallet isn't bad ass)

1800 RPM on plane, 2000RPM 31-32MPH,I'm about 11-12 MPH over RPM until 3500 or so, then it starts to increase,4000 about 58MPH and so on.

My daycruiser has a 54 gear, and cruises about 65 to 70 m.p.h at around 3000 to 3500 r.p.m. It runs along real good at about 2000 r.p.m. It won't pass the decible tests with the turbos, so I don't really know where to run it anymore. Parker & Havasu are out of the question, and its too shallow in Blythe. Anyone own a private lake for v-drive boats.

When i cruise the flat i have to say all under 2800 rpm mainly 2500 but will plane as low as 2k then the occasianal blast to 7800.It has 1.15 gears and the prop i cant remember either 11x15 or 11x16(i think this one)
Btw my old jet would slow cruise at 2800 but mainly 3100 but only pulled 4900 rpm
My i/o i mainly stay at 2700-3k with the family

My blown 21' Howard planes at 1500- 1600 and cruises nicely at 2000- 2100, approx. 30 mph. I pull a 48% gear and the prop is a 11 3/4 x 16 3 blade or 2 blade, same size. Doesn't burn to much gas at 2100 rpm.
