Boat fever, three boats is still not enough, I love to look at them constantly, anyway I'm building a 427 for this hondo and wondered if 10.3-10.5 is going to ping and run like *%#! . Does anyone know if octane boost will save me or is racing gas my only option, I don't see gas at the pump here on the central coast of CA. I saw alot of fuel tanks at the last Classic v-drive meet at San Antonio lake, wow what a lot of fine equipment. The boat might as well be radical even though my dad is trying to talk me out of high compression. This will be my first v-drive, jet currently is a '78 centurian with 468 bbc (the family boat).
1970 Sanger flat for sale in classifieds with pictures, make me an offer.

Nice looking boat, anymore pics?
I would personally keep it at 10:1 and run 91 pump gas, but you have to make sure your timing is dead on, probably even a bit advanced. My plans are to build my FE 10:1 compression and as nice as I can BUT I still want to run pump gas.

Using 91 pump gas, you are on the border (ping-wise) with a compresison ratio of 10-10.5:1, and whether or not you detonate will depend on several other factors about your build.
You may want to consider the following:
Local small airports nearby offer 100LL AvGas for perhaps $3 per gallon. This fuel is 100 octane and contains 2 grams of lead per gallon, so you may want to consider spending $15 on five gallons and then blending with your 91 pump gas...say 25% AvGas to 75% 91 pump gas. In most cases, this should put you in safe territory as far as pinging with 10:1 compresion ratio.

I had a 10.5 motor that ran on pump gas and had no problems but you need to back the timing off you can't run 34 deg at full advanced or anything like that because it will detonate the motor.
Needs to be 28-30 deg at full advance. If you have access to av-
gas that is your best bet and then you don't have to worry so much about the timing issue and you will get better performance.

hey, thanks for the replies and information, gas mixture, yes, sounds good, I'll check with my local airport, as for Hondo boats in '68, I have no clue, I just know what the title says, and from what I hear, there was alot of mixing and matching back in those days. Here is at least one more photo.
P.S. I bought a boat a year ago that I could not figure out until I had the title, Sanger 1970. I thought it was something else.
Thanks for interest, Daddy B

No offense, but it looks like a Sanger to me. My uncle has 68 Sanger and it looks identical.

Hey, thanks for the reply, for a minute there I thought I made a mistake and bought a ranger bass boat! How did she handle? and What type of set up did you run? I'm interested in engine placement and gears for the split.

I never ran the boat I bought it for the trailer... I took a chainsaw to it actually, it was cracked to hell.
Put the v-drive at 96" and the motor in at 34. Gears would depend on propeller and engine set up.
