Anybody know anything about this lake? I guess it is east of Fresno. My brother lives in Sac and wants to meet half way and this is the place he likes. I am trying to convince him to come a little bit further to Buena Vista but I don't think I am making any head way.
Thanks,
Justin

Millerton Lake State Park is my home lake--about 20 min N. of Fresno. Have been boating there for 35 years. It's located on the border of Fresno and Madera counties. There are some pretty decent camp grounds--modern restrooms/showers, some camp sites right at water when the lake is full, with 2-3 lane ramp right there--on the Madera side, but just day use on the Fresno side. Temp is central valley HOT--usually cools down at night, but the water temp is great. Water is used for irrigation, so lake level goes down after July 1. Currently it is at the bottom of the first (of four) launch ramp. Table Mountain Casino is located just a mile or so east of the Fresno entrance. Little town of Friant, at the base of the dam has a couple of decent restaurants and gas just a few cents higher than in Fresno. Don't know the price of gas at the marina. Most of the boating pressure is on weekends--usually no boats on weekday mornings before noon or so.
Aside from that, it's a terrible place--not worth the tow--because we don't want any more boats messing it up.

Millerton is a good place to boat. Been there many times. The main, wide open, part of the lake by the dam has no speed limit. Speed limit is as fast as your boat will go :)
Besides Kings River, Millerton is my next favorite spot to boat in the Fresno area.

Cruise up the mountain and go to Shaver instead.

It's a wonderful lake that is fed by a river. You can even boat up the river which feeds it. Here are some pictures I took with my dad last year:

Yes, Shaver Lake is about 1 hour up the road from Millerton. It's at 5500 ft elevation which means the air is clear and beautiful--80s during the day, 60 at night, but you'll lose about 15% of your performance. Smaller than Millerton, but it usually stays full until Sept/Oct. Good camping at Edison campground, but make a reservation.

Yep, we camped at Edison every year for two weeks when I was growing up. Shaver is an awesome place! There are some rocks you need to watch out for but if you hit them you really weren't paying attention. We alomst bought property in Shaver instead of building a house in Havasu.

I was just there on Monday 7-5-04.
By the end of the week they should be using the #2 launch ramp.
I have been boating at millerton now for 34 years.
Come on up, gas price at the shell station just bellow the dam before you launch, for 92 octane was $2.34 a gallon. Only .01 above what it was in Fresno.
The only thing you really need to watch for is the obstacale bouys this time of year as the water starts to receed.
Also being a state park you can not drink alcohol on the beach.
They allow camping on the Madera county side of the lake.
Hope to maybe see you at the lake!

From past experiences Shaver gets booked up really fast as well. We used to make our reservations as early as they allowed, 9 months in advance.

Shaver is one of my all-time favorites. It does get busy in the summer. Best trips have been after Labor Day. Great campground.
