What's the meaning of a Star Tatoo on Chicks?

I've seen MANY chicks with a tatoo of a star either on the small of the back, or the back of the shoulder. Sometimes its filled in, sometimes just an outline. I know it's not the Star of David, nor a pentagram. What's the meaning of this?

Partly from a search: The stars are called nautical stars, and they're fairly common in the tattoo community. They originated with early sailors, as evidenced by their name (ie, nautical stars). Prior to the wonders of modern navigation technology, sailors depended on the stars. If they couldn't see the stars, they couldn't find their way around. Because of this, many sailors had these stars tattooed on them so that the stars would always be with them. Kind of helping them navigate their own lives....
People that have them say they represent love or freedom, I have even heard Orange County...I don't think they understand where they come from...

I was standing on the dock at the Roadrunner a couple years ago and noticed something. I was the only guy within a ten foot radius who didn't have a tat on his arm! I know those guys got tatted up to be "different". Here's your sign!

There is a girl that works out in the 24 hr in Rancho Bernardo that has these 3 filled in stars (rather large) on her lower back. She must be all of about 19 or 20.
I would guess over 80% of the these young girls are getting a tat somewhere. I am glad my daughters aren't into that.. at least not yet.(fingers crossed)
My question is, if you can't see it unless you look in the mirror, then you must be doing it to look cool, otherwise what is the point? I guess I am Old School, no piercings or tats...just some decent muscle definition is good enough for me.

True Dat...I always like to ask kids why they want to get a tat. They can't come up with a decent answer...I know it's just because they want to be like the other kids, but they won't admit it. And if they say it's because they "want to be different", I tell them the easiest way to be different is to be yourself. Like I pointed out in my last post, I turned out to be the "different" one because I don't believe in mutilating my skin to join the mass individualism crowd.

When i started getting tatted 15 years ago there were a couple of different reasons people got them.
1: Culture
2: Biker
3: Gang member
4: Artistic and personal reasons
Now I look at al these fools that are covered head to toe and they are not even 20 yet. I almost wish I didnt have them now because of all these clowns.....

I say next time you drive past the booth ask her the meaning of the stars. I'm pretty sure she'll explain it. You might ask her what is the meaning of the piercing on the back side of her neck.

The funny thing about girls getting tatts is they almost always get them across the lower back. I don't know if this is true but if they ever want to have a kid they will have to go through natural child birth. :eek: They will not put an epidural through the ink. All I know that epidural was a God send for my wife and me.

Just an opinion here, but I think the star comes from the brands of clothing companies. Super Star or Porn Star. They don't bother me really as long as the girls don't get out of control with them. I have no room to talk being that I used to be pierced in a few places. Never went for the ink even though I like some of it.

I have a few tattoos and cannot really explain why I got them (over tens years ago). I will say 2 out of the 4 I could do without. They are all small so its no biggie. But I do want to tattoo my husband's name on my body somewhere. Coincidentally, your name too RTJ! :D :D

Okay, the nautical star is from the "traditional" tattoo genre. It represents the "North Star" from old maps and all that hooey.
Meaning: It signifies "the way home". This is for the Nautical Star only. The other stars will have their own meaning of which I do not know;)
You'll see "Swallows" (bluebirds) alot on people into traditional old school tatoos. That represents "the journey" which is why you'll often see a nautical star near a swallow;)

Yeah, I thought of that. But it looks dumb IMO, so I thought/hoped it had some better meaning. I'm going ask the checker chicks at my local Vons, she's got one. It's just 3-4" star on her lower back (unless there's more I couldn't see when she bent over to bag my groceries :p ). I've seem many girls at the sandbar with just a single star as well.

I told my daughter's friend who had a butterfly accross her lower back that by the time she's 40 years old, that cute butterfly will look like a B-52 bomber. Personally, I don't think they flatter women. It's like graffiti on a women's beautiful skin. A tatoo artist is just a tagger gone straight.

I didn't get my first tattoo until I was 30;) I doubt I was following a trend. WHat's trendy right now is tribal tattoos. Not saying there's anything wrong with tribal, just that that's what seems to be very popular right now.
I personally prefer old style tattoos. I.E things like nuatical stars, pin up girls, sacred hearts, etc.
