Yep, and it got even better with the Attitude. ;)

Yes. but to get the most you need to alter the programing of the computer, esepcially on diesels.

is there any good programmer or chip for f150 5.4 liter???

how much horsepower gain is possible with a gas engine with a chip/programmer.

The hypertech power programmer seems to be the best out there for the gas trucks. I think it gives up to 30 hp. plus you can accomidate for larger wheels and tires.

wow there like $330 for 30 hp. that seems a little steep. does 30 hp make a big difference? im not a big engine guy as youve noticed:D

Dude, $330 for 30 HP is a pretty good deal, figuring guys spend a couple of grand in head work for 70-100 HP gains. Your 5.4 is probably in the 250-270 HP range if stock, and that is being pretty generous, so yes, 30 HP would be pretty noticeable.

2001 ford f150 supercrew with the 5.4..... or a 2003 yukon denali with the 6.0

On a stock 5.3 you would gain about 13 more hp and 7lb of torque.
This was taken after a dyno. The more mods you have the more it will help.Dont know much on the ford trucks:)

will your hypertech fit on either of those??

Check out the current issue of Trucks magazine (issue 21). They do an independent intake kit comparison. In summary:
AEM 8.8 HP
Airaid 5.6 HP
K&N 11.5 HP
Volant -1.2 HP (yes negative)
AFE did not fit, could not test due to tube hitting fan blades (not just the shroud) Can you say oops.
Tests were done on a stock 99 Silverado 5.3L with 75K on it.

I thought Volant and K&N were the same? I had one of the guys from Volant in here telling me they made alot of the K&N intakes for them.

Nope. They have a completely closed system; something the article talks about. Very nice looking but not much different than stock with a high flow drop-in replacement filter. Get air in first, then worry about temp. Truthfully, what is cold air when its 100+ outside anyway? At one point we did consider them to make our tubes for us and for us to supply them with filters but it never panned out.

After I put a K&N and Flowmaster exhaust system on my F150 I read an article in Trucking magazine which stated performance gains would only be reached above 3000rpm with the mods.

thats what im looking to put on my f150 sometime, the k&n and the flowmaster 50 series... probably in a few months

I can't tell you if I noticed any performance gains, because I did the mods as soon as I bought the truck.
If nothing else it sounds better.

they do sound much better... and there also together about half as much as a hypertech that gets you 30 hp too. you can get about 11 hp as it said above w/ the k&n and 5 to 10% gain with an exhaust

If you're going to add a less restrictive intake and exhaust and a "chip" and really want to maximize your investment, spend an extra $500 or so and get a set of headers too.

how expensive are headers and what kind of hp gains do u get???

CA Stu
07-15-2004, 01:53 PM
I paid $550 for Doug Thorley headers for my 96 Dodge 5.9l (360) Ram 1500, $300 for the install.
I never ran it on a dyno, but from my seat of the pants dyno, I'm sure I picked up a load of low end power and torque. Good for towing, ya know.
Thanks
CA Stu
PS I have since traded in that truck and got a diesel.

toomstone. I have a Superchip with a Gibson Exhaust, and it works pretty well. I have a couple of friends that have tried different chips, and have burned cylinder heads from the engine running too lean. The Superchip folks will create a custom program for your vehicle..

I just bought a 2000 Ford Expedition 5.4 with 59K miles. Its lifed with 35" tires and no mods to the motor that I can tell. Anybody got parts for this, cheap? Air intake, exhasut system, programmer. I noticed a difference when I did these things to my Dodge Ram.
