What is the actual cause of detonation? Is it a hot piston, a hot exhaust valve, a hot combustion chamber, the quench area when the gasses move into the chamber? If I could keep all these from occurring (other than the hot exhaust valve), what do you think the result might be? At what point (in degrees of crankshaft rotation) does the fuel ignite in the cylinder to "create" detonation (maybe I need a fuel technician)? Any thoughts?! Mike

I am concerned with Detonation with higher compression pistons running on pump gas. I have 13/1 at the present time but I want to lower it to be able to run a pump gas.
I have an idea that I have not tested, but in my mind it makes sense. I have a naturally aspirated jet boat and want to raise the compression i'm using in my engine. I am running a single plane manifold so the temperature of the air fuel going into the engine is cool (pressure drop and air speed). This is my idea for modifications to the engine.....
Plumb the rear of the block (yet to be determined) where cool water could flow into the water jackets. (from the jet pump) Water would expell through the water pump mounting holes (or a position @ the top of the water jacket).
Remove the pipe plugs from the ends of the heads (stock, cast iron) and plumb these for fresh water also. (water in @ the back, out @ the front)
Use a custom copper head gasket "without" any water passage holes to pass any water through. (my block is O-ringed) Oil passages for drain back would be open to allow oil back to the crankcase.
"Optional". Possibly use some type of heat dam (ceramic coating) on the combustion chamber, exhaust valve and piston top.
There would be a freshwater manifold (using water from the jet pump) with outlets to divide the water going to each side of the block and to each head.
The water flowing though the heads would be continually free flowing to keep the heads (exhaust ports and combustion chambers) as cool as possible. Use "hot" plugs.
The water to the block could be adjusted to keep the temperature at a better working temperature for the pistons and oil. Or it could also be allowed to free flow too.
All water would be ejected through seprate thru hull fittings (2 or 4 depending on decisions made).
All these modifications to help eliminate the possibility of detonation from occuring with pump gas using a higher compression piston aspirated motor, turbo'ed or blown application.
Whadda you think? Would it work!?
The contradictions @ the top of the post is something I did not correct before I posted....Sorry. I do want to lower the compression....but only the amount necessary if I am to run pump gas. Mike
