I had an interesting conversation tonight with a prop guy.
He informed me that the newer props today are cupped differently.
I was thinking an 11 1/2 x 15 for the Howard.
But he says must guys are going 11 3/8 max.
I was looking at an 11 1/4 x15. But my Dad(old school) thought it wouild spin the motor to much. Now my brain is hurting....
Try every prop. you can. Let the boat tell yo what it want's
Everything is give & take. Find one that you, your dad & your boat likes.
I had 2 props that were both 11 1/4 x 16 Menkins. Identical to look at. But one slipped like Hell out of the gate while the other one hooked hard and man handled the boat. So you just gotta try them or rely on the prop builder and tell him what you want.

A good prop man can measure the cup for you from edge to edge.This will tell you how much bit is in the prop. A flat prop, one without much bit will start out at 15, then 16 then back to 15. Not much bit so you run a taller gear. If you have one that has a lot of bit, like 14, 16, and ends up at 20 or so you run a real low gear. I'm no expert, but this is the way it was explain to me. Take your prop to a good prop guy and have him measure it! I'm talking about a 2 blade.

All jabbing aside. I hate to admit it but, my new boat is going to have a hard time beating my buddy Paul's Daytona jet.
& also btw I've seen him change impellers at the lake in 15mn.
Actually I have always thought of a jet as a perfect floating dyno. You just beat the Hell out of the motor till you see an rpm increase and you know you have found more horsepower. You can't do that as accurately with a flat cause driver and how free the boat is the variable.
I wouldn't dare say that on the jet thread.:D
I had a jet guy try to tell me that his little joy stick thingie (dirverter) was the same as cavatation plates on a flat. I just starting laughing. Then I told him to get in a flatbottom and use the plates like he uses his dirverter and call me from the hospital.

Paul has let me run his deal a few times. It is the smoothest fast you could feal. Your back would like it.
Jeff, we still need to know what gear is in it and what rpm the motor is happy at! Ror just gave me a 11 1/2 X 17 that could be cut down. If I were in your shoes, I might just remember the Nostalgic TV show called, 'Father Knows Best'! He will be your crew chief, won't he? You can call Bill also for his combo in the #65 Tinkertoy boat. I was just wondering if indeed props have progressed. And what some of the other guys are running. I plan on running different props and seeing what feels best. Ricks, prop off his boat worked well when we stole this boat from Dad a couple of summers ago.
Dad doesnt know what gear is in the v-drive. Guess I will have to tear into it to look for markings.
And the big Ford cant turn that many R's can it???

Yes, I want to come out and try the easy going ski class.
But , after one race. I will probably be looking to sell the Howard and step up to a K-boat. ;)

Would you like to run a new Nostalgic class within the ski class? We are trying to initiate this idea to reduce the number of boats in the same class, maybe make it older than 69 or whatever year leaves us with an even number for a heat! KKK.....must be a KrackerBox you yaking ab out?;)

I think the slow one's have 4:D ......( . )( . )....I use a 16, seems to work good! I have a question now, I run a 30-pitch on my " OB ", what is a good top-end prop for a v-drive? Don't tell me, it's all about gearing...right!:confused:
The reason you have a 30 pitch on your outboard is because the propeller is turning HALF as fast as the engine. High speed props are different, 16 pitch works good. Then its ALL in the gearing!!:D TOM..
