I am looking for a mini starter for my 540 project and am wondering if anyone is using one and which brand is good to go with.
The boat is a 21' eliminator daytona so I am worried about clearance between the side tunnel of the boat and the motor.
Any ideas would be great

there r several good one's out there...depending on how much u want to spend...u might ck RacingJunk at www.racingjunk.com and look under engine parts...i personally use the GM BBC Hi-Po starter with n/p...fits fine in my boat...which has dbl stringers full length...i hope this helps a little

when it comes to starters, my choice is "tilton" Budlight

Dragboats, I think most of the minis use either a NipponDenso or Hitachi starter. Typically what happens is the contacts inside get burnt. Gives you a starter that "clicks" but wont spin. Pull off the end plate and look inside and you will see what fails.
I know that Honda used to sell repair kits for theirs which I believe were Hitachi. All Toyotas use the Nippondenso. While my dealership doesn't stock the repair kits, a couple of the guys have purchased them, so they are available.
OK, found the CAT website. Is this the starter you have? If so, you should obviously try CAT for a replacement solenoid. Might also try Powermaster as one of their lines of starters looks almost identical and they list a replacement solenoid on their site.

I bought mine from Arco Marine (http://www.arcomarine.com) 3 years ago and it's still going strong.

Hi Wet, you will have a problem with the corner of the starter hitting the inside part of the tunnel no matter who's it is. You can machine off some of that corner from most starters to make it fit depending how deep the engine is set in the boat and how far back it is. The other option is to go to a smaller flexplate (153) tooth and move the starter in to the other holes. If your enging is externally balanced it becomes a little more of a pain. Good luck. Neil

OK the motor is going to be inturnally balanced :D
Just found that out last week when the crank I was going to need to much metal so now I need to buy a better crank.
Anyway which starter should I go with if I have to move it in closer to the motor?
Any pics or numbers would be great!!
