Not true. They sink like a rock.
Although they were based on the 1940's "Schwimmerwagen" which was a German VW amphib vehicle.
VW came out with the Thing in the 1970s in answer to all Baja Bug craze. They wanted to offer an off-the-shelf off road vehicle.
They didn't catch on all that well and only distributed tham in the States for a few years. However, they were a big hit in North Africa and Australia where much of the terrain in desert.
The current bid of $4,100 is a steal for one in good condition. I know a guy who paid almost 3 grand for a rust bucket Thing with a seized engine.
