I have read about some good info on these boards and I hope
you can help me out, Bought a 82 cole TR2 almost 2 yrs ago
it came from nor cal,(coleville) sat on a trailer since 84, took it
apart, had Billy-B paint it, put it back together started on the trailer
and the Mechanical tach jumps at idle and when you give it some rrrs, The cable is lubed, I have know ideal what causes that, We
have always had electrical tachs in the other v-drives.

A cable that makes too tight of a turn will cause the needle to jump.

If that tach runs off the v-drive, could the gears lashing and banging back and forth cause the tach to start jumping? The cable winds up and releases, then repeats the process? Just wondering....I took mine out and went electric because the Velvet Drive tranny means you have no tach while in neutral.

Sounds like the cable(or) housing is bad or it has too tight of bend in it. The back lash could do it at idle out of gear but if you rev the motor it's under load so it shouldn't do it!..
