Thread: 460 experts please help...

I would like to know how much is too much on the tach. I have a stock 460 BBF hooked to a Berk JE with a Place Diverter and Aggressor "A" cut impeller. The pump is fresh with only about 10hrs on it. It is all wrapped up inside a 1976 Spectra 18....a fairly heavy boat. Oh yeah, it is fed by a 600 CFM Holley with vac. secondaries. Right now I am turning 4500 RPM when running WOT. How hard can I run this engine without pushing it past the point of stupidity? How much oil pressure should I be seeing? I use straight 40w and no oil cooler, yet. The whole set-up has 500 hrs on it. I hope that I have provided enough info to get some answers. If I have left something out just let me know.
    Thanks in advance,
    Steve

I run a 429 at 5500 rpm on the bottle has had no prob turning that bottom end is stock.I dont think you will be capable of overeving the 460.should see at least 60 psi at wot.but at 4500 you only need 45psi

that number is about right on . i had my stock 460 to about 4700 with a 850 cfm carb. and a cj manifold. with a jc and "A" impeller . so it sounds like your right on track . and that was in a spectra 19. spectras are great boats. iam in the middle of making mine in to a 460 twin turbo. its about done . http://plumbersassracing.com/images/comnpletemotor.gif

Remember, the Aggressor A is like a Berkeley AA which would be too big for your boat. I would run either and Aggressor B (Berk. A) or and Aggressor C (Berk B) you would get more RPM's and a better mph.

But in a heavy boat I would not run an aggressor c it will take forever to plane.

    hack job,
I don't know what kind of speeds I am getting to be honest. I do know that when I put the Place Diverter on the wetted area on my hull was significantly reduced. Who knows....maybe 50 MPH?

    Steve,
Glad to hear you have the 18'er running. 4500 RPM with an aggressor A equates to about 350hp at that RPM. So, in a sense HB is right, you could probably cut the impeller down a tad and pick up some RPM and ultimately some speed. But I would guess that you are gpsing around 55-60mph in the 18'er. If that is cool for you, then keep the impeller the way it is and enjoy the fact that you'll cruise at a lower RPM than the guys spinning the smaller impellers. However if you want to spin more RPM on the motor, cut her down. One thing I probably wouldn't do is go down to an Aggressor C. Thats roughly equal to a berk B and is going to feel a little slow out of the hole in that hull. If it were a low profile 18'er it would be different, but considering your hull profile and weight, you probably don't want to cut below an Aggressor b/c. As for oil pressure, the rule of thumb minimum is 10 psi for every thousand RPM. 4000RPM=40psi, 6000rpm=60psi. I hope that helps and get us some gps numbers on your ride. http://free.***boat.net/ubb/smile.gif

As for oil pressure I am seeing between 30 and 40 PSI. I would guess that the lower pressure reading is a result of no oil cooler. I am thinking of trying a multi-vis like a 20-50w. Should I be concerned about running my boat at the afore mentioned numbers with the oil pressure readings that I am seeing?
