Thread: Yamah LS 2000 Jet Boat?

    Okay,
I'm probably going to get laughed right out of here, but.... What are your impressions of this little 20' twin engine jet boat? Most of you guys probably ring more than the boat's combined 270 hp out of one cylinder, but they do consistently run about 55 mph on GPS, and seem pretty reliable, low maintenance. It'll be a first boat for my wife and I, and something to trailer to a different place each weekend. After the first season, I'm sure I'll want a little more out of it, and I've spoken with a few PWC tuners that say 65 mph is attainable for a couple thousand with new impellers, carbs and head work. Thoughts?
    Thanx...

While I wouldn't consider it a "real jetboat", if it lets you guys get out and have a good time in a responsible manner, great. As for the boat itself, I have not done a whole lot of research on them as they are not a performance threat, and don't apeal to me. My advice would be 1. talk to people who own them. 2. get a hold of the maintenence schedule and see what your going to be in for. and perhaps most important 3. is it a 4 stroke or 2 stroke? Is it EFI or Carbed, and lastly is it compliant with the C.A.R.B. and AQMD requirements for at least the next couple of years. As I'm sure you are aware 2 stroke equipped boats/watercraft are starting to be exiled of some bodies of water. It would suck to buy a boat that the government was going to make impossible to use in the next couple of years.
Just out of curiosity, how much does a boat like that go for? my guess is that you could have a really low hours late model custom jet for the same money http://free.***boat.net/ubb/wink.gif
    Good luck to you,

    Hey Chris,
Thanx for the reply. The Boats run about $20,000 new, and a good used boat with low hours usually runs around $13-14,000, either way, with trailer.
They are two stroke motors, and that does worry me with the increasing wave of two stroke bans, but I live in the east, and they seem to at least be lagging behind the west. We really like the look, layout and even the performance of this boat. I'll try to post a couple of pictures, wish me luck here...

For $14,000 you could get one HELL of a real boat. I have taken those things in as trade-ins almost brand new because the owners couldn't stand them. They are 100% plastic, fade really quickly, touchy as far as reliability goes, expensive to repair, and not durable.
If they were $8K I would say it is a good alternative to a jetski, but at $12K plus they are a wildly irresponsible waste of money.
But... They do handle really well.

if you have 12+K to slam down for one of those smoky shitboxes, why dont you just use that as a down for an Ultra, and finance that baby for 15 years, how does 300 a month sound ? Look into it.....

YAMADOG; I own two Yamaha Wave Blaster 2's, and though I LOVE them, I wouldn't go out and buy one of those 2 engine jet boats.. To me, they still are "jet ski/wave runners" and you'll never get the reliabilty you can from a 4 stroke. Hell, for 8K, I'll sell you my Targa Jet Boat, complete with FRESH BDS BLOWN 460 Ford!!!! It's in the readers ride area, just type in "targa" on the search engine. Ivan

    I agree with you there.

Actually, plastic reinforced SMC. Stronger than most hand layed, gelcoat, etc and cheap to repair.
Yami can build tuff, light hulls.

    They sure do.
Yamadog, you can improve your performance a lot by getting rid of the catyletic converters which should be on your boat if you have the twin 1200's. As for improving your pumps perf contact www.impros.com (http://www.impros.com) they are the PWC pump specialists. They also do a lot for the Yami boats and the Sea-Doo boats.

Here is a nice Ultra for 25K and it has a special trailer for hauling jet skis too.

I almost bought it before I ordered my new one.

    Hey Guys,
Is the boat really that bad? The Hull actually sounded pretty well built...
    From the Yamaha Site:
    The Hull and Deck
The LS2000 utilizes a 19' 6" deep-V, multi-chine hull with 18 degree dead rise. The hull and deck are constructed of multiple layers of fiberglass with sandwich core construction reinforcements.
The fiberglass stringer is separately constructed, laminated into the hull and then injected with floatation foam to provide 100% floatation safety as well as longitudinal and lateral structural rigidity.
The engine bed, which represents a revolution in boat design, is a separate fiberglass part bonded into the hull with polyurethane adhesive then laminated to the hull and stringer system. This separate engine bed also isolates and protects the engines from any water in the bilge area of the boat as well as providing isolation from engine vibration and noise.
The deck is then fastened to the hull with both mechanical fasteners and polyurethane adhesive giving this revolutionary semi-monocoque fiberglass structure unsurpassed strength and rigidity.

Are they really this bad? I've been out on a few and they felt solid and well put together. The one I've been out on most is two years old, approximately 200 hours on it, and doesn't seem to suffer these things. Am I blinded by my love for the design? I thought Yamaha had a very good record for durability and reliability, particularly with their marine engines?
Submitting questions to learn, so please don't anyone get P.O.ed.
    Thanx again Guys...

Personally, I think it has a lot to do with the fact that it looks like a jet ski, sounds like a jet ski, therefore it's a jet ski. I've had good luck with Yamaha jet skis. However, I know those boats suck the fuel down. If it works for you, go for it.
On the other hand, you could get a real nice used boat for $12-$14K.
    Just my $.02.
