Thread: 2005 F250 V8 3v????

    4day!!
anyone know the word on the new engine available in the '05 F250. It's a V8 5.4L,3 valves per cylinder gas engine. the towing capabilities lok pretty good (high rpm though for their hp and trq. claims). Withe 4.10 it is rated at 11,500 lbs towing. My boat and trailer are about 6,500 lbs. Is this a new engine to the F250?? I heard it is based on the mustang engine. Just cant justify the 6.0 PSD. the boat only gets towed about 40 miles to the lake. Althoguh it would be nice to be able to tow to powell or bring the boat home(300 miles). I know i could justify the mpg w/ the PSD. Any feed back yet on the new V8????

With such small displacement, it's going to get pitiful mileage since it'll be running at such high rpm's to stay in the power band. If it is new (5.4 has always been offered although this may be a redesign) maybe they are pushing it to phase out the problematic V-10. I'm sure it will tow your rig home without blowing something up but I doubt you'd want to go much more than 60mph after you figure out the fuel consumption numbers.
BTW--a buddy has a 250 with the 5.4 and all the mods(intake, exhaust, chip, what not..) and it can't hardly get out of it's own way and sounds like a lawnmower on top of everything else :squiggle:
maybe check out 04---or LATE 03 Ford diesels if you can't jutify the extra expense on a new one...let someone else take the depreciation hit :mix:

I am sure it is the same 3V 5.4 that is in the F150. Rated at 300 HP. All the tests ever written on it say the F150 is under powered with it. I could only imagine how under powered it would be in the heavier F250. With 4.11 the mileage would probably be pretty bad. When I had my F150 4X4 Supercrew with the 5.4 I averaged 12-13 MPG. I now have an 03 F250 CC 4X4 with a diesel and love it. It gets 16-17 MPG and feels like it will tow a house. Fairview Ford in San Bernadino usually runs an add for F250 CC 4X4 diesel. XLT $32000-33000 Lariat $36000-37000

I would not get the 5.4. if you cant see the cost offset for the psd I would look at the 3v v-10 I am in the same boat as you are . I have a company truck and never drive my own until the weekends and towing, everyone says get the diesel but Im not sure, alot of money extra for the diesel I average about 10 to 12 thousand miles a year.
