There were 3 different hemis made by Chrysler in the 50's. They were all manufactured between 1951 and 1958 for cars some a little longer for big trucks and industrial applications.
Chrysler has 331, 354 and 392's Fire Power
Dodge had a 241, 270, 315 , 325, 345 Red Ram
Desoto had a 276, 291, 330, 341 Fire Dome
About the only thing that interchanges between them is the starter mounting plate.
They were all completly different engines.
The Dodge hemi's make good swaps into early 30's and 40's Fords as they are about the same size as a flathead V8.
FYI the SBC is also the same size as the flathead, that's one of the big resons there are so many SBC powered Ford street rods running around.
www.hemi.com is a good place to start getting information on these motors. There are lots of websites on early hemis and lots of collectors. I have a couple of chrysler firepower engines in the garage and have had quite o few Chrysler hemi powered street rods over the years.
The engine is probly a Desoto 341, Dodge 345 or Chrysler 354
Was the 383 a hemi. I had a chance to buy two of them and didn't take it. One was running the other was broke, but he sold them for $350.00.
360's, 383's, 413's and 1st 426 were all wedge heads. Street Hemi ... a 426 ... was 1st sold to the public in 1966.
