Thread: head gaskets

I am getting ready to install my new edelbrock marine heads. But I can't get a good answer as to which head gasket to use. I have gen iv block and the two gaskets that were recommened were the fel-pro 1017-1 and 1037. The bore size of the block is 4.28 I thinking of using the 1037 because it has a bore size of 4.37 and the 1017-1 is 4.54. The other problem is the 1037 has 3 water passage holes at the bottom and my block has only one hole. I was looking at some literature from fel pro and they have a diagram of the gasket and point out where the holes should be. Has anybody done this or should I just leave it and use the gasket as is. Before I was running 990 heads and I can see on the block where the holes should be due to the corrosion where the gasket holes were.

In case anyone needs this info. I spoke with the guys at federal mogul/felpro and they told I will need to drill two half inch holes on both sides of the block to accomodate the holes in the gasket. I have an older gen iv block. They said it is done all the time.

I am thinking about doing this also with at gen IV. Could you post a pic after you drill the holes in the block?

I haven't drilled my deck yet, but the machine shop sold me some 1017-1's. The only difference is the end rectangular holes. So If any one knows why not just open the end of the 1037's to match the block?
I'd rather cut the gaskets than drill the block.
    The 1017's are for a 4.5in bore
1037's are for a 4.25in bore thats why I want use them

We always used a 1027 on a small bore motor. 4.370 bore size. Not familiar with these others.

After reading the previous threads I called felpro again to verify the info. The cutout at the end of the gasket(1037) was omitted due heating problems and the elimination of this extra hole redirects the water for better cooling. the only modification needed when using the 1037 is the 2 holes at the bottom. The reason I am using the 1037 is because of the bore size (4.370). I have a 454 bored .030 which makes the bore 4.28. The 1017 gasket is a 4.54 bore size and I was told could cause leakage problems down the road. The 1037 is also for marine applications (stainless steel). The 1027 is basically the same except it is not stainless steel.

this gen 4 5 6 gasket stuff with all the combos is enough to make a man dizzy... I used a mecruiser gasket set (about the same as a 1017) on my gen V with 781 heads (gen 4) that was for a gen 5-6 after researching for days ... worried about it, then said fuke it, been running great for over 200 hours .. no problemo's .. these gasket makers must need gasket installation 101. then again maybe the 1/4" of gold gasket sealer I sprayed all over them is the cure all... who woulda thought .. Just in case there was any lingering curiosity about drilling the block for the 1037 gaskets, I did drill the block for the two 1/2" holes. It was very simple and since the block was still on the engine stand I turned it so the top was facing down and layed down on the ground and drilled the holes so the metal shavings would not fall into the block.
