Thread: I am dangerous......

I am dangerous because I have a little bit of knowledge and wanna do more work on my boat. Let me tell you a little about my boat, where it is, what I have done and where I think I want to go. Please let me know if you see anything I am missing or should do differently.
First off, I just got 30 hrs on my motor, I was told to get at least 20 hrs before I tried opening it up due to the forged alum. pistons I used (hyperlyte I think) Anyways I am turning 4300 rpm with a b impeller at a solid 50mph on gps. I built the lower end of the motor to be a real runner and solid. So I am not concerned there. But I dealt myself the death blow with a 600cfm carb, stock ignition system, stock fuel pump. The motor is a little over 9.5 to 1 and I run 91 octane no problem.
    What I'd like to do.....
First change out the stock fuel pump for a 130gph race pump, to a fuel pressure regulator and then past a gauge so I can monitor my press before the carb. Next change out the carb for a 750cfm or 800cfm and then install the NOS sniper 150shot. With this I would go to a colder plug and upgrade the ignition to and msd box and pro billet dist and coil.
If this doesn't give me the desired results, I would then change out the exhaust and use the lightning thru hull system, just because I don't like OT for the reason that I know I will always burn myself on the pipes.
While I am in there, I want to pull out the timing chain and add a gear drive cause I like the whine noise. I don't really plan on using the nitrous all that often. Maybe a run here or there. Its more for the effect you get when a stranger looks in a sees it.
Maybe with all these changes I can hit a solid 55 someday. :notam:
But don't forget this is a 350 .030 over. Yes a small block chevy.
Alright, hit me with your comments, good, bad, ugly, also taking donations of small block parts. If anyone has a blower they wanna give away I'll scrap everything above and go that direction.

without knowing what cam you have and how much work has been done to the heads, id say the carb deal might give you a little more umph. with a matched cam and some good port work, definatly give you some umph. ill have to search for it but i may have a cam card for a great sbc combo. but youll have to work the heads a bit. the whine of the gear drive is cool and all, but id reconsider and go with a good double roller chain. its just my belief, but i think the gear drives take more to spin. you want the least amount of valve train friction as possible. especially in a sbc.

dont be too sure guys. a properly set up sbc can creat lots of torque and hp. you can make an 18' jet boat go pretty damn hard with a high reving small block. wouldnt put one in a larger boat, but the 18? it can scream with the right set up.

jason, im thinking of swapping my 850 Demon for a larger carb. if you want to try this one let me know. CHEVY high performance magazine did a test on carbs on a small block chevy in thier March 2004 issue. titled "Rare Air!" you might be surprised on what they found out. i was. dynoed carbs from 390 to 1000 cfm. the 830cfm gained the highest peak power, next carb was a 950, too much but not bad at all considering they didnt touch the jets or air bleeds on any of the carbs from the box. interesting read for sure.

Let me be of some help, instead of spending money on your motor, pump and doing the gel on your boat. You can save yourself some time and pick this up for around $4,500.00 cash and be stopping almost anything out there.

    Or this for $3,000.00
    http://adcache.boattraderonline.com/6/9/7/75932397.htm
This looks like a bitchen boat...
    http://adcache.boattraderonline.com/6/6/3/75839363.htm
STEAL this for around $1700 cash and drop a BBC in it.

This is also another one to look at for $5,000-$5,500.00

    Another one in that range...

Now this boat is bitchen and I know it is a strong hull that can take speed. You could grab that for around $4k

Check out all these for $2-$5k

Of course that is just what I would do. If you are sentimental to that boat, then you have to do what is in your heart. I just put myself in your shoes and used my thought process on what I would do. Let me know if you need any help Jason.
