Hey there, not many Chrysler people left in boats, I have seen a few SB Chrslyer's in jet form 360's and only one BB mopar. I have a 23' Sleekcraft Executive Jet, It came with a 454BB chevy. Work has been ongoing for the past five years and manage to get a good season out of it. Last year's mod's were a 540BBC and an AMT SD-309 pump set-up. She turns 5400rpm's with a AA impeller and is currently running right at 70mph. Good luck on your boat, best reguards, Chuck

The sleek daycruzers have the most versitle engine/drive options that I have seen on any performance boat. I chose this hull because it was a jet. A very heavy jet! When I got the boat it ran a solid 53mph with the original 455 Olds/Jacuzzi set up. I did the Chrysler thing to be different. I have seen this boat with dual outboards, V-drive,sterndrive, and jet. I hope to go a little faster this year, maybe 65!

    Hi,
I recently acquired a Mopar powered Jet Boat last August. It is a 18' 1977 Mantra with a 383 big block and Berkeley JG. It took some looking and they do exist but are not common. The plan is to upgrade to a 440 and use the 383 in my 69 Roadrunner eventually. If you don't mind, respond with more detail on your build-up. I am interested to hear more about any V8 Mopar powered boat out there.

MoJetBoPar, why go to 440? I think a B engine has more to offer. The RB engines have too much weight on the spinning mass, or too much piston/rod wieght! I chose a 1971 400 engine because it has the largest bore of all the Mopar engines, and I can significantly reduce the piston/rod weight by using a steel 440 crank. I chose Ross semidome at 10.5:1. I have Indy open chamber heads and a Indy offset intake. The beauty of this is in the balencing. Stock 440's are very hard to balence. I found my 400 block for next to nothing. For about three grand I will have a 7000rpm screamer with about 550 horses! That's a jetboat engine.

Hate to tell you this but, you're probably not going to see 7000 rpm with your engine, unless you run a cut impeller (B or BC). According to the Berkeley charts you'll only be turning 5600 rpm with an A impeller and 550 horsepower. When you build your motor keep in mind that the pump is going to limit your rpm (like it or not) and you need to have your peak horsepower and torque come in aroud the 5500-5700 rpm mark. Although the charts just give a ball park figure, I find that they're not too far off.

Mopar fans. Do a copy and paste of this web address to see a really clean, great looking 440 mopar installed in a jetboat.

While I applaud you're engine build-up, it is something a drag car with minimal rolling resistance can most appreciate. As Squirtcha? stated you have to realize the rpm band that your boat will most often be in. I'm new to the jet boat hobby myself but have had Mopars for 17 years and from what I've learned recently is that you want to create major torque to move that boat thru the water. Cubes rule! Speaking of which, a 400 w/440 crank is around 444 cubes, give or take an overbore, isn't it? The advantage of your pkg is the lighter reciprocating mass and an allegedly lighter block (read the latest Mopar Action for more detail). Granted less reciprocating mass= freed up HP. Usually something a drag racer is looking for. A stroker crank with 496 cubes would be the happening set-up. That would move the Day Cruizer thru the water. Myself, I'm on a budget, so I'll drag a 440 out of the barn, either overbore or toss on the closed chamber milled heads to get about 9.0:1 compression and proceed to run it relentlessly. My hull is a rather light retro/drag 18' Mantra that has a loader/ride plate, shoe and now a droop snoot. It actually feels like the loader needs to be trimmed back because the faster it went the more stable it rode and from what I've gathered it should have a slightly unstable feel if right. First time out I beat a 18' similar boat but with a "Clamp-on" 200 hp Merc, 4 people on his boat, just me on mine. Not too bad but it needs to go faster. I do have a adjustable NOS Cheater set-up I'm thinking about installing (125hp stage only/cast pistons). Any thoughts on that or would it be better served on my 69 Roadrunner(440)?
