Could someone clarify exactly what a hook in the hull is? From what I've gathered, its a deformity or curve in the hull. But are we talking a curve along the lateral keel line or what?
    What causes a hook?

From what I've been told, Hook is put in the hull by the manufacturer why, I don't know. There's this book called "Marine Jet Drive" by Seloc Publications. Think someone in here said they found this book in CP performance.com. Anyway, there is this section in it defininng Hook and Rocker that can be found in hulls. Hope this helps.

The only reason I ask is because I read articles and posts about people getting their hulls straightend and hooks taken out before paint.

For anybody into jet boats the "Marine Jet Drive" from Seloc Publications should be required reading. It's been around a long time, but is still a good reference.
"hook" and "rocker" are used to describe two different conditions in the boat bottom. A hook is a downward curve at the stern end of the keel line. I have read that some manufacturers put them in intentionally to aid in getting boat on plane, but find it hard to believe. Also heard it was the result of popping the hull out of the mold to soon. Whatever the cause, it cuts top speed performance.
Rocker is a downward curve or droop forward of the stern. Just imagine a keel line shaped like the base of a rocking chair.

hook can also be caused by the trailer bunks being too short and not extending to a little beyond the transom. From the weight and length of time, sooner or later it'll cause some hook.

Anyone thinking of repainting a boat should check the above link out. Also there is a great step by step for taking a boat off the trailer. http://free.***boat.net/ubb/smile.gif
