Thread: Caddy 500 in place of an Olds

    Hey All,
I thought I would ask this before I tore everything apart and tried it on my own. Will a caddy 500 fit into my boat in place of the 455 Olds that's already in it? It should work right, they both have the BPOC bolt pattern on the back of the block. I can buy this Caddy 500 ($2000) from a guy who was going to put it into a chevelle, it dynos out at 778 HP @ 5600 RPMS and 612 FT @ 2300 RPMS almost all the way to redline, it was built by a company in Florida called MTS (Maximium Torque Specialist I think but not sure), they just do Caddy motors, it's even got aluminium heads. Is this a good idea and will it fit, and is anyone else running one of these?
    Thanks,
    Ryan

those caddy 500s are torque monsters. i would think if you can get the right set up youd be amazed on the performance in a boat.

Awesome motor. 5-inch bore spacing. HUGE crankshaft. Torque for days.
    And heavy.
Don't know much about a marine application, but I'd sure like to see such a setup...in somebody elses boat.

Actually the guy says that it weights 29 #'s less than a stock 454 with iron heads. The guy selling it was going to use it in a chevelle bracket racer or something or other and needs the money for taxes, or so he says. The motor has MTS aluminium heads, a sheet metal manifold and oil pan and a crank trigger instead of dist. He says he will let me weigh the thing if I want. It came out of an eldorado. Does anyone know about the bolt pattern and if it will bolt to my Berkely?

I considered doing one of those once. I would look for exhaust maniflods or headers first. I wouldn't be concerned about bolt pattern or trying to bolt it to a berkely. I saw one at a car show in a Ford pickup with a Ford intake manifold on it.

I got an awesome header builder, an old cogger up in Peoria, AZ. He will take about 2 months to build them but they will be sweet with jackets and all so I'm not worried about that. I was just wondering if anyone has run one of these or not and if they knew anything about actually getting it to bolt in the boat. I am thinking about trying this setup in an old junker boat and then if works I would transfer it over to a nicer boat later on.

Go For it! You'll probly have to fab up a front motor mount plate, and a water plate to replace the "car" water pump with some water inlets. You can do it, it ought to run like a beast too. The guy is right about the weight too, it'll be lighter than a 454 w/irons. Cad motors are very reliable and throw down the torque. You could probly spin 3 pumps with that monster. jk, sounds like a killer deal, and a good winter project. Post the pics ASAP. Also if you don't already have a good quality driveshaft and an SS impeller, that should be addressed too. Make sure your stringers are solid 'cause you'll rip them to sawdust.
