What kind of hp are cast GM cranks capable of taking? Are they capable of withstanding 500-600 hp?

Taylorman, What'r you up to? Posting alum rods 'n' stuff are you going to ditch the 455? MP is right, Do it right the first time. A vast selection of forged steel aftermarket BBC cranks can be had for reasonable prices, and it seems they keep getting cheaper depending on where you look. Now, I know guys that swear that a cast crank with good machining and balancing is good for 450-500 hp w/no Nitrous. But if you want fairly cheap insurance, bite the bullet and get a quality piece from eagle/scat etc. We've been over this but I'd steer away from C.A.T. stuff, If the price seems too good to be true, it probly is just that.
Summit sells Forged steel BBC cranks from $700-$800, thats not bad. I'm not a Know-it-all engine builder or nothin' but I've built mild nitrous motors with eagle cranks that make 1000+hp and don't have the first problem.
