Which type are you using, and in what?
what holds a cam button in ? does it just float in the front of the locking plate or go behind it?

sum-g002 button and a sum-g1792 locking plate from summit going into a bbc
Wheather it's a solid or a bearing type, you put the button on the gear and then the plate, it will retain it!..
ok that works. their is still a little play front to back is that ok ? or should it be snug. and how much clearence should their be from the front of the button and the front cover? it ti a hyd cam.
I assume this is a roller cam? Yes, a little play is normal. Are you using a stock type tin front cover or a fancy alum piece?

Is this a new roller deal to this motor?? If it is, what distributor gear are you using?? ...........MP
no it is not a roller it is a flat tappet hyd.with a alum front cover.do i even need a button with a flat tappet or is it just a good idea? :hammerhea
It's a good idea as it takes the side load off the chain, and yes, you need a few thousandths clearance between the button and the timing cover (otherwise it would "clearance" itself rather rapidly). Where are the instructions for the cam button, they should give teh required clearances.

The only time you need a button is if you run a roller cam, with flat tappets the lifter holds the cam back, notice that the factory don't put them in!..
