Thread: Engine Question

My boat has the 496 Mag HO, and I have read many threads regarding supercharging, adding the Raylar kit, etc, and have seen costs from 6k all the way up to 10k for these kits and installations.
I do not recall any thread regarding the Chevy crate racing motors, and a boating application. I was wondering why some of the re-power, or add power guys have not looked into these motors? The particular motor below is 620 hp and 675 lbs torque at a little over 12k.
Any information regarding these motors would be greatly appreciated.

There has been some talk on that motor. Look around. They are set up tight for marine use & a little high on the comp.

I had the same thoughts. Eliminator did use these in a boat. From what I heard you need to change the cam and add accessory mounts. The guys at Az speed and marine had some outragous price to do so. I think it could be d0one for a few grand. I stopped the process because I looked into ins on the engine swap and it was a 3k increase. My .02

I have seen Dana boats putting crate GM motors in their boats before, don't know if they made any internal changes or not...

shoulda painted it black, put the merc. hat on it and called it good.
cam will need to be changed
Why does the cam need to be changed? Is it to close the intake before the exhaust?

We have a customer who recently bought that same engine, call me or pm
me if you want his phone number.
As for your questions about why many people haven't done it, my opinion is that most folks are spoiled with the efi systems and don't want to feel like
they've gone backwards and that makes some sense but you always get
an efi system to put on that engine and get it tuned properly. The biggest
reason though for people with newer boats is the cost associated with buying
headers to fit it, pulleys, alternator and power steering pump mounts, water
pumps, etc etc., those parts get expensive and may make it almost as
expensive as getting a Pfaff or Teague motor done with EFI included already? While the Chevrolet crate motor is solid and well built, I would bet
my money that the custom built engine will have superior parts and be assembled better.
I would think that you could sell your 496HO for some good money but remember when you do though that the new buyer will want all of the
accessory parts, exhaust manifolds etc so don't forget to plan for those.

    Keith,
If you have a 496, will the efi bolt up to that motor and just tune with a new ecu program?
