Thread: Transom Cleaning

Any ideas on cleaning off the black soot that buildups on the transom? I've tried all sorts of stuff and none of it really works as well I would like it to. Those of you with 496 HO and the 525, what do you use?

I use Starbrite Black streak remover.

I think most people use Simple Green for the general cleaning of their boats but for stubborn stains would Soft Scrub work on the tough transom gook? Maybe you could use some Cleaner wax and kill two birds with one stone. Mine gets really scummy and I use vinegar and very fine steel wool on the stainless exhaust tips and Simple Green followed by cleaner wax on the Gel.

I actually wax the back end of the boat with Zymol first. Soot wipes off when cleaning!

That hasn't worked. Nor has Wash Wax All, Wipe Clean or 409. Wash Wax All works great for the end of day wipe down to remove water spots and leave a nice smooth shine. Wipe Clean works great for that as well, and really does a good job getting the Silencers cleaned up.

I got mine off with a light dose of rubbing compound (years of it built up from previous owner) then polished it with a marine Teflon polish (star bright I think), followed by a coat of wax (3m marine). After that it comes off easily with soap and water when I wash the boat.
I wax my boat several times a season and usually apply two coats to the transom. Then at the end of the year reapply the Teflon stuff. It has been working for me pretty well. Most of the grime comes right off and the rest comes off with a sponge and soap.

Diluted simple green was required at every stop on my old 502. Hope it is not a problem with the new motor. But, if you have a 496 HO be sure you do NOT use higher than recommended octane, that will really cause you to soot up with NO increase in performance or longevity.
