Does anyone know how to tell which shaft is in a Berk. pump? I can do a Rockwell test on it, but without knowing what it should be, or what a performance shaft should be, I won't know what I'm looking at. I need R scale values for a performance or stock shaft, and I need to know where to check.
How 'bout it Jer??? Jim Brock?? Duane?? Jack?? Anyone???
    Thanks in advance. :coffeycup

A good machinist will have magnets they can check it with and tell you what it is.

17-4 shafts should have "AQ"or "HQ" stamped on either end.

I'd like to know too as prop shafts are made out of the same stuff. How does a guy know if he has a aquamet19 or aquamet22 shaft? Or just a plain ol' s.s. shaft. My brand new prop shaft has zero markings. I paid for a 22 but what did I really get?

    Haquamet...heck...I don't know.
I don't think 17-4 stainless has any Fe in it...I don't think magnets will work. I think Aquamet is a stainless/Chromoly alloy, where 17-4 is hardened stainless. I could be wrong.
What does Berkley use in their "R" pump?

I was thinking off the top of my head from what I have seen. I couldn't remember which one it was. I knew it was one of the two.
The shaft in my pump has no markings. I know it's made out of 17-4, cause I made it.
