I,m thinking of selling our boat, the buyer thinks i have too many hours (500 hrs) on a 1998. he also states that a mercruiser 350 mag. is only good for 600 hrs.
what is your average hours per year and how long does a stock mercruiser last ?

Ithe buyer thinks i have too many hours (500 hrs) on a 1998According to yachtsurvey.com, 150 hours per year is average. So, you can cite their number to tell the buyer that your boat has LOW hours. (Average hours in SoCal should actually be higher anyway, since the boating season is year-round.) Sounds to me like the buyer is doing what buyers are known for doing: find faults with your boat to get a better price. Good luck!

500 hrs seems low to me for a 8 year old boat. thats only 62.5 hrs a year. So if your like most "family" boaters and go out for the day. putting on 4-6 hrs on the boat. thats 10 -15 trips a year. I don't see that as "high use". I have put more hours on a boat in one 10 day camping trip then that boat averages a year.

That's 60 hours a year, pretty light use really. I think 100+hours/year is considered a lot of boating around here.
IMHO, a 350mag serviced regularly and not abused should be good for a few thousand hours before major tear-down.

I was told my 502 Mag MAY need a valve job at 700 + hours. I bought the boat last year (its' a 98) with 260 hours on it and worked hard to put 40 more hours on. I guess I spent too much time in the gorge looking at really cool boats!

I've over 350 on my HP500EFI and runs the same as the day we bought it. Change the oil every 25 hrs and I'am looking well past the 600 mark. Most engine failure is neglect in service or over heating.
