Hello my brother has a Johnson 8hp outboard motor. It is model # jbrcde serial # b0104387. The motor says on it 100:1. He has called several marinas in the Virginia area and they told him 50:1 oil mix. Ok he did that but it smokes like a freight train. I mean like a smoke bomb.. Does any one know what oil mix ratio to use on this or a number I can call for him?

He is just a little concerned I nor he has heard of 100:1
Some of the smaller Yamies run at 100:1. Oil injected motors run leaner then that at an idle. Is the motor broke in? If the manuel says 100:1, I'd say it would be OK, but I think I would run a synthetic, such as Synergyn, Pennsoil, or Amsoil.
BTW if you're still scared of 100:1, go richer, the synthetics don't seem to smoke as much.
I agree. 100 to 1 is fine.
If he's nervous, split the difference @ 75 to 1.
Yamalube (all brands of synth's are blends) is almost smokeless and odorless and reasonably priced. I've used it for years on all my outboards. (2 types of 2 stroke oil : injected or mix marked on the containers label).
I run it: 4 oz to 1 gallon on our fleet of 2 strokes:
Go peds, weed eater, power tools, daughters 2 stroke blender, pumps.
Fresh gas with a fresh mix of oil is essential for little outboards.
