Thread: Making a small block think its a Big block

    Okay, This is my first Boat a 16' Banshee I received the boat less motor. I am building a Small Block Chevy for her. (I have a lot of small block stuff) I keep hearing about big block power, my thoughts were to build a Stroker 383 I have almost everything to do the job. 6" rods, Tunnel Ram 2 4s Will this work? I would like to know before I spend 710.00 for a set of BassettÂ’s. And why do I have to run wet headers? I would think the chance of hydroing an engine would just suck. Thanks for your input. Anyone on the East Coast running Jets I would love to hear from you. I think i'm all by myself. Thanks again

    Here's some specs on my "mild" 383:
    HP- Over 400HP @ 4,400 RPMs; Max- 452HP @ 5,200 RPMs
    Torque- Over 400ft-lbs @ 2,800 RPMs; Max- 466 ft-lbs @ 4,300 RPMs.
    However, those pulls were made with headers, so I imagine I'm giving up a little for the EMI Thunder wet exhaust.
    Scat crank, Eagle rods, TRW 10-1, Edelbrock Performer RPM heads w/170CC intake (mildly ported- bowls blended) and 64CC chambers, Crane Hydraulic Roller cam (222/230 .509/528), Crane gold race rockers, Holley 750 cross drilled & converted to an 830, Holley Dominator manifold, full MSD. http://www.goldenplasma.f2s.com/foru...es/happy04.gif

    Turbo charge it. You won't have to (most likely) run wet exhaust. You will make the small block think it is a big block. You will not spend 750 on headers. in a 16 foot you shouldn't need a bb any way, and this is coming from a died in the wool bbc guy!

    Agreed, at 16' if you pay attention to your setup, your 383 will do you right. Besides, there are a lot of boats out there running lowerHP on bigger cubes in larger hulls that aren't dismal performers. With the HP and torque numbers HH posted, you would beat the crap out of any of the new 30-40k custom jets in the 21' range with stock power. 8-)

    Heads, heads, Heads! Wanna make big power outa small mill? I run Sprtsman dart 2`s with 200cc intake runners and exhaust ports the size of a 396. Manley pro flows! 72cc combustion chamber. Havasu, if you are running 64cc chambers, then you DON`T RUN PUMP GAS! I also run with Chevy`s .028 compressed composite head gasket just for a little more ump. Decked the block .025 and left the heads alone. The heads are .040 thicker to resist warpage. Aluminum heads are a whole hell of a lot better and flow characteristics are excellent. I didn`t use them because I built the motor in `92 and aluminum heads were still new, cracking, and warping. But heads are the key for small block big power. That`s not my 2 cents just a factual proven method. All replies are welcome!
    If you already have the small block parts use them. Time in the garage is not time in the lake. And yes there is no substitute for cubic inches. But when a small block smokes a big block,,,,,Damn don`t it feel good!

    What i have so far is .030 350 block a steel stroker crank, 6" Rods, K B Dish top pistons with my 64cc Angle plug 2.02 from BowLaws in FL. (good bench flows) will put my compression ratio around 9.5:1 I want to enjoy my water days, not crying at the racing fuel pumps. I have a tunnel ram set up with 2 660 center sqirters. What i need help with is a Camshaft type and ignition set up. please let me know what combo will work for me. Thanks

    Go for that SBC, CHEAP to build ,lightweight serious hp for your investment for info call us we currently have a flatty,a tunnel jet, and a 16 foot V jet boat running 70 plus mph. Small blocks are our specialty call or E mail us if we can help Regards Tom

    I actually set mine up pretty conservative, as I was trying to build alot of low-end torque. Hence, I went with the 170cc intake Edelbrock aluminum heads. It sits in a big, old, family boat. http://www.goldenplasma.f2s.com/foru...confused50.gif
    The cam I picked idles at 900 to 1,000 RPMs- not bad. It also pulls the maximum HP right where it was supposed to- 5,200 RPMs. Here's the specs on my Crane Cam (http://dab7.cranecams.com/SpecCard/D...1=Display+Card). With better flowing heads, you will probably have more HP, but might lose a little torque due to velocity.
    I have my timing set at 18 initial, 36 total (blue springs), with all the timing in by 2,500 RPMs. I also installed a start/retard module, and a rev limiter. http://www.goldenplasma.f2s.com/foru...es/happy43.gif

    Aquaholic, dish pistons, do you meen stock, or blower style pistons? Is stock dish, 64cc is gonna detonate on pump gas. 9.5 to 1 is not even close to actual high comp you will run. It`ll be over 11to 1.
