Anyone have one? How bad are they? On paper it says only 30tq/15hp difference. One thing is the 4.6 is more common than the 5.4, so if you need a new motor, you can get one cheaper and easier. You can also do just about anything to the 4.6 that you can to a mustang.
    Opinions?

I had an 1998 F-150 ext. cab with a 4.6 it was lifted, 3" flowmaster, K&N Filtercharger and a superchip. It moved pretty well I must say.....I also had a 03 Supercrew with a 5.4 and I really couldn't tell a whole lot of difference in the two. Not too sure with an Expedition how a 4.6 would be tho. My 2003 Expedition 4x4 had the 5.4 and it wasn't nearly as peppy as the trucks were.

My girlfriends brother has one with a life and 33's on it. He regeared it with 4.10's I believe. He has no complaints and the gas mileage is really good. He tows a 21' boat and says that it handles it just fine.

Dude dont make the same mistake most of us have, get yourself a real tow vechicle at least a 3/4 ton and you will nevewr look back, as far as thre 4.6 not what I would want. Good luck+++++++++++++++++

I just bought a 97 White Eddie Bauer, fully loaded with the 5.4 it has a good bit more tq than the 4.6s I drove.
I dont need a whole lot of towing power, I have a 17' Flatbottom...this sucker should put it all around...the biggest boat I will pull is my dads 21' Eliminator, he pulls it pretty easily with the 5.7 1500 GMC.

5.4 was the better choice had a 00 expy with the 5.4 that towed our 21 pretty good but when we steped up to a 25 size boat the big truck had to follow

Had a 97 Expedition with the 4.6 in it. and it had 115,000 on it when I traded it in. Tow a 21' foot runabout just fine. boat was about 4,500 dry.
Stepped up to a 24' and a F-250 PS. If I was to do again I would go with the bigger motor..

my wife has the expedition with the 5.4l and I had the 4.6l in my supercrew before stepping up to the 05 f-250 ps and the 5.4 had alot more torque than my 4.6
But for towing a 21' boat either is just fine in my opinion.

Good deal you got one! You'll be happy you got the 5.4, my last truck had the 4.6, it always got the job done, but the 5.4 has far better towing power (low end torque). Beleive it or not our Expy with the bigger engine actually does better on gas too, the 4.6 is a good engine, just too small for fully loaded trucks and Expy's IMO.

I personally think your rig will pull a 21 foot jet boat fine. Most them weigh 3,500-4,000 with the trailer. That should be well within your tow rating and your gross combined vehicle rating. As with any trailer, make sure the trailer brakes are in top shape and funtioning normally.
I have a 2005 Toyota Tundra with a 4.7L 282HP V8 that tows my 25 Shockwave very well. Up the steeper grades at 55+ MPH and braking is no problem at all. In fact with the 4 wheel disc brakes on the trailer, I don't even notice the boat in tow while braking.
Nothing wrong with pulling that 21 foot boat with a 3/4 or 1 ton but if your truck is your daily driver, a 1/2 ton truck is a lot easier and more fun to drive.
