Thread: Spectra swim step

I have a 77 Spectra 20' and the original fiberglass swim step only has a few seasons left in it. Does anyone know of a place that can fabricate one close to original or a quality replacement? Thanks

Can yours simply be repaired? That would probably be cheaper than tooling a new one.

Howard Custom Boats should have a swim step your looking for, or go to a teak swim step, I think they look better.

Teak does look better. You might want to buy a maintenance kit with it to keep it looking nice(the only drawback to teak).

I probably will go to Teak. I was just trying to avoid the maintenance but I agree, teak does look better (in the water). My brother is having one built, we will see what it looks like when complete.
Hey Spectra Brent, any gatherings this summer?

Teak looks good, but all I remember is my dad cursing every time he had to re-teak the steps and the wood ski locker cover in our Nordic. He ended up varnishing them after about two years of constantly "teaking." Good Luck!

I had a boat for 7 years with teak swimsteps and ski locker.Just rub some teak oil on them before you go out each time and they will stay looking great.

I'm with Desert Dog on this one. After you have refinished them once, just keep them clean and oiled and they're easy to take care of. The key is CLEAN and oiled. Because most of the oils these days have molecules that form a polymer after they've setup, you don't want to trap dirt in the oil as it wont wipe up next time you go to oil the wood. My vote would be for the teak over the fiberglass swimstep any day.

Thanks for all the info. I e-mailed Howard boats and see what they have. I am leaning towards the Teak though. The boat is all original so now I am just trying to refurbish. My next obstacle is the paint. I think that is next winter though. I don't want it stuck in the paint shop when it is time ot be on the water.
