Has anybody been able to make one of these modern planetary gear reduction OEM starters work on an Olds 455?

I checked one out at the store - the bolts are the right distance apart. It looks about right except that the actual pinion is thinner by about 1/8" - 3/16". I don't know if it would engage enough or if it would cause problems. They actually are rated more powerful than the original:

I also think that the new style is "sealed" by design - shouldn't be any explosion hazard issues.
Thoughts? Ideas? Snide comments? :boxed:
