Has anybody been able to make one of these modern planetary gear reduction OEM starters work on an Olds 455?

I checked one out at the store - the bolts are the right distance apart. It looks about right except that the actual pinion is thinner by about 1/8" - 3/16". I don't know if it would engage enough or if it would cause problems. They actually are rated more powerful than the original:

I also think that the new style is "sealed" by design - shouldn't be any explosion hazard issues.

WOULD YOU JUST BUY A STARTER ALREADY!!!

ROFL - Geez... and I was just telling my Dad at lunch today about Just Jets, and how much I enjoyed SmokinLowriderSS' nostalgic posts (among others) Guess I asked for it!! :boxed:
BTW, Rex's IMI 108 looks like a nice piece at a fair price, unfortunately it just doesn't fit my budget. I am probably going to end up with a locally marinized 10mt.
El Prosecutor, I went and looked around the WAI website and could not find a listing for any of the 350-455 Olds engines. In fact, the list showed "N/A" for every V-8 Olds application. What was the application for the starter you looked at?
What is wrong with your current starter?

My old starter is an old style 10mt automotive starter with a cavernous spark-emitting throat that has probably brought me close to death more times than I can imagine. I discovered this while tracking down a hot start problem. The actual starting problem probably has more to do with wiring (see my thread "Pop Quiz") The old starter fires right up on the tester but makes a real loud noise and there is a definite wiggle in the business end, and the worn out bushing is starting to squeeze out.

Looks like a winner if it will work. I am just not 100% sure that it is spark proof. :220v: :skull: :220v:
Running through that applications list I see Buick and Pontiac engine apps, but nothing that would indicate an Olds engine application. Remember, Buick and Pontiac had 350 and 455's. You would have to cross the Lester numbers over to see if any go to an Olds V-8.
Giot any Alternator/starter rebuilders in your area? Might be able to have yours rebuilt and converted to "marine" at the same time.

Glad I could help.
You DID ask for snide commentary.
I'd want the gear reduction unit myself but I already have a pricey top-mount reverse-rotation unit, about $280 each rebuilt and I do like it higher out of the bilge.
