A court order is not as hard as one may think. You can file a small claims action against John Doe ($26) and fire off subpenas to the entire IP/dialup chain. Getting them to respond is another story.
Keith, this is my opinion. You have a very solid reputation with anyone who personally knows you. The boat was top notch, and anyone who knows what they were looking at in your original thread can see that, then when you say it's better than it looks, people believe you. Some idiot who disagrees with your observation on a nice boat doesn't carry the impact you do. I feel for the customer, but I'd think he won't take it serious. Case in point, you know who I am, I'm the Green River, Utah boater that bought a Bahner from you while you were at the Boat Brokers. I have looked to you for advice as recent as last month and you told me straight. Now, nearly everyone in Green River looks at my boat as useless, you know the logic of most Utahns. I don't let it bother me for a minute as I like my boat and that is all the matters. The fact that some stranger takes you on in a forum like this where many people personally know you just makes his opinion worthless. I only wish all salesman were as straight as you. LakeApe, this idea might hold water if everyone on the internet were plugged into a giant hub. They are not, however. You are so far from my broadcast domain that I can't imagine you even guessing the UUID of my NIC, never mind my MAC.
If you could figure out my IP address (which I highly doubt you can), you could ping me and a MAC address would be associated with my IP address in your ARP table but that will not be my MAC address. It will be the MAC address of your gateway.
Keith, I would encourage you to not be discouraged by anecdotes describing the difficulty of the task. I work in a large IT shop and we track this stuff down all the time. We have two full time staff who do this. It is extremely possible. The difficulty will be the legal hoops you will require to make the ISP look up the information. Some ISPs, even large ones, will help you with no legal prodding if you simply share your case (consisely stated) and give them the address of the offender.
