How do I set the timing I have never done it before?
I just had to replace the fuel lines on the olds. The lines were dry rotted (only 2 years old) must have been the wrong type of hose. Same symptoms because the pump was sucking air and cavitating it would fall flat at the top end. Be sure and use the a1 marine fuel line if you plan to replace the hose.

Used to have an Edelbrock 750 on my 455 and never had a problem. Switched to a Holley 750, they must eat better because I would empty my bowls @ 4800-4900 rpms w/ a mechanical. Ditched the mech and went for a holley electric and never looked back. Also a must have is to get an MSD distributor. Set the timing @ 34 degrees and have fun. The Olds is better at short bursts of speed rather than full lake passes. My Olds will spin to 5400 rpms (time for a bigger impeller)Dont let anyone discourage you, the 455 is a diehard and a brute just not an all out speed demon. Take the right steps and she'll last you. I'd run the old carb for the weekend and when you get back upgrade the fuel system and get it running right. Whatever it takes to get on the water dependably is my moto !!
I know exactly what is wrong with it........ its an Oldmobile !!!
Ouch! The shit we have to put up with from some of these guys.
