Thread: Travel Agent vs The inter-Net

I finalized my travel plans to Santorini Greece and I wanted to pass on what IÂ’ve learned. First I went to a travel agent to get their spin on the air-fare. Seems they forgot to point out that Olympic Airlines flyÂ’s there with only one stop as opposed to the others with two stops! Also, the other airlines have to transfer to Olympic for the flight to and from Athens and Santorini. I guess they donÂ’t get as much $$ by dealing with Olympic? Oh yea, if you book with them a few months ahead you can get a good price, call and they may even go lower on the price.
As far as a Hotel I didn’t really ask them, I looked on the net. I learned that some, or most of the larger hotels sell, rent a large # of their units to travel agents. Seems that way they are guaranteed near or full booking for their units. I found out from their own web-sites though that they keep their better, “Sea View” units for their own bookings. They also sell them at a 10-20% discount. Here’s what we booked for Sept. http://www.travel-to-santorini.com/...mari/boathouse/ it’s Sea View and only about $72 a day with a buffet breakfast. Now if I can only find a high speed Power Boat tour for the Island!

It's the same contracts, air and lodging, as a travel agent will give you. Yes you have no travel insurance to pay for the protection but if you use a major credit card to book they can stand by you in a dispute. I here they are very fair in there rulings. But then you can allways play it safe and pay the travel agent there fee! :hammerhea

Done 7 vacations through the internet. Never had a problem, and the last trip got 2 ocean front rooms in Jamaica when we checked in, for the price of one, saved me about $4000.

Beware of Italy! I know ofa few Itailans, three, and others that told me Horror stories about their trips there! :rollside: Seems it's now the poorest and most socialist country, Greece is the richest, in Southern Europe! Even in a travel show I saw the host warned that pick-pockets in parts of Itally are a accexptable part of life. My bosses dad varified this as his own relatives tried to steal money from him as he was sleeping. They told him not too get up-set, it's our culture, or something like that. Not bashing Italians, my Wifes one. We went out to eat with here friends once, Italians, the resturaunt had about a dozen pictures of john gotti hanging up on the walls and they were dragging how he was such a great person! Nuts. Check the reviews on Santorini, your're find a few advising going to Greece instead of Itally! No offence meant to the people of Italian desent, just passing on what I heard?

On my last trip to Vegas, the guy I was travelling with wanted to use a travel agent to make sure everything was taken care of properly. I went along because I didn't care too much. We ended up paying a few hundred extra and the agent sold us the wrong insurance, causing problems when we rented a car. Of course, the car rental made us buy insurance and wouldn't accept the coverate of my gold card (yes, I had the schedule of coverage with me).
We had someone to bitch to... but the agent wouldn't return our calls so that didn't pan out like it might have.
I'll never rent from Alamo again and I have no intention of ever using a travel agent to book a vacation again.

I'll check that out at the local video store. Thanks. Iwas thinking of staying at three cities in each country, and traveling by train too.

I'll let you know how the trip, in sept., goes! Lina, in the movie, is a 10, she left acting after the movie to raise a family and died in a car accident about six years later.
