I have been a fireman for a long time, and have preached emergency preparedness forever. That being said, I don't have sh*t. I probably don't even have a flashlight that works. If and when we have the big one, it will be like a survivor series for us. Oh well, roll the dice, and I gamble I'll be O.K.

We live one mile from the 94 quakes epicenter. Had water lots of food (always) camp stuff in the garage. I turned everyone's gas off in the neighborhood and then hmade coffee and breakfast on the tailgate of my truck for the neighbors. After that, no problem just drive 10 miles in any direction and all the markets were no wait. People freaked at first, ran to the local market and cleared the shelves. Quakes are so localized though there's realy nothing to worry about as far as food or water shortages. The biggest problem was no water supply in some areas for flushing toilets. Our water stayed on and I trucked trash cans full of water to my friends that needed it for a few days.
Camp stove and lantern is must though.

My wife said "keep fresh water (every two weeks) in your truck and have a few other things along with the water just in case". BANG!!! We had the Northridge earthquake and our shop was destroyed. At that time our home was 2 miles from our shop. The house had minimal damage, but the roof fell in on 6000 square feet (at the shop). "It was the worst of times, it was the worst of times" (sorry to the author). It shook for 3 days and we left for Havasu. We needed sleep and our cats did too. We live in Havasu now and have EQ insurance on our home along with keeping all of our vehicles packed with an EQ kit (water, food, etc). We all pray that it doesn't happen, but we know it will. PS, been thru the 1971 Sylmar quake too. WE HATE THEM! Also, have CASH on you at all times, small bills (not $20's) so that you can go to a store (without electricity) and purchase what you need. NO CREDIT/ DEBIT CARDS without power!

Son of a BITCH!!!! Just had another little quake a few minutes ago. Doubtful anyone else felt it unless you live near me.
I have to bump this. Please do all you can to be prepared. I hate to sound like Chicken Little, BUT, I know there are a bunch of us who aren't the least bit prepared for a major disaster.
This right here (http://www.fema.gov/pdf/library/fdsk.pdf) will give you a good start. Obviously you can add things to fit your specific needs.
Remember, during a major disaster, DO NOT count on local fire and police agencies to help you out.

I dread the day of a mass casualty incident in my area... Nice and quiet with my 30 calls a year.

An MCI stresses every agency. LA City and LA County have huge departments, but, they also have huge populations. IMO, it's all relative to your volunteer companies.
FDNY has about 12,000 firemen and they couldn't handle what hit Manhatten a few years ago.
    Nothing beats preparedness.

After the 1994 Northridge quake, we kept water and 'energy' bars in our cars. Don't let your fuel tank go below 1/3. If you really have a big BANG, get your family together (DON'T FORGET PETS!) and come out to Havasu. Let us know you are on your way, (phonecall? E-mail) and we will help you get what you need to get by. We have property to park motor homes on and a shop to repair things. If you get here and have not hooked up, call Fast Fiberglass 928 8544527 and we will hook up. We know it's a scarry time and we can help. Lot's of hotel rooms here, and 'rest' is important. Hope nothing happens, but if it does, we can help.
