My best friends dad was a electrician on the SR.
Says in the early days they had two Buick 455's running at full song to spin up the turbines before lighting off! When the Buicks were retired they were replaced by SBC's.
Full load of fuel to get off the ground. Plane would make one turn......then it was gone! Would refuel then start it's flight path.
After decommissioning, he worked on the U2's and w/NASA experimental flights using the U2's.
    Been to groom lake too.
The plane in that picture is one of his bird's.

Here is what I spend most of my time in while flying for fun......1942 Boeing Stearman with P&W R985. It's one of my dads planes, took 5yrs on ground up restoration. About 200 of my 400hrs in this baby and its a blast to fly.

True....but this baby does closer to 115 kts with the bigger power. You can throttle back to about 100 kts to get fuel consumption down to about 17 gal/hr from 22 gal/hr. Its tough to get consumption much below 17 gal/hr even @85-90 kts... :notam: Just too much drag!! I took it up to 11,000' one time and was getting 140 kts and burning 17 gal/hr leaned down. Only problem was it got cold with shorts and a T-shirt!!
    Thanks for the compliment.
