"After a three-hour rain delay the race was under way. We were feeling lucky and large as we also had our last year's World Champion F-2 boat there doing official pace boat duty. The seas were average with 3-4 foot waves, not bad considering the day before a tropical storm went through. We were in fourth place on the fourth lap, entering corner 1 on the outside and Pier 57 cut to the inside of us and passed our boat then came right back at us hitting the left side of the boat. From the second they passed us and we collided it took a total of five seconds. It's almost incomprehensible how quickly this happened. Two more seconds passed and our boat was knocked into the path of the now airborne Lightning Strikes. As their boat missile'd across our bow and up over the rest of the boat their trim tabs or possibly the out-drives ended up in our engine compartment, basically blending our motors like a Saturday night margarita. A fire immediately erupted completing the crash and ending the race and our season. There is no blame on any particular boat because we all know its racing and its dangerous. Deck to deck close proximity racing on an unstable surface with limited visibility is bound to lead to some very exciting action. Fortunately we survived, the JBS Super Vee did not."
