Prep for color

I am restoring a 1973 Beisemeyer Mini Day Cruiser Jet boat. The hull has lots of cracks through the original gel coat, what material should I use to fill them, and how should I prep this for paint or gel?
Trying to understand the gelcoat process, do you recommend a book for better understanding of this process?
