What year is the boat/motor? Check for crank rotation on the pulley. Depends if the rotation is clockwise or counter. This will narrow down where to set the timing. Get back; I'll let you know.

    My .02:
You want 36 degrees total advance.
So subtract the advance of your distributor from 36 and you have the initial timing.
    In my case:
Mallory COMP 9000 unilite dist. = 24 degrees advance so
36 (total advance) - 24 (dist. advance) = 12 (initial advance). Set the initial timing at 12 degrees.

What if you have an HEI ignition? Distributor advance doesn't mean much then!!!
If you have an HEI, then set for 16 BTDC; if not, set between 8 & 12 BDTC.
