Inquire with your local amatuer radio club. Get a Technician class license and you can talk on 2 meter, 220 or 440 all over the 11 western states easily and reliably thru repeaters, and simplex(car to car or car to home, about 80 miles or so)with no repeaters. CB and Family band radio is limited by atmospheric conditions, output and terrain and is not as reliable at long range. Hope that helps.

I have a hand held, and would guess my range is about 3 miles depending on terrain.

Handheld marine VHF radios are limited to 5-watts transmit power. They're line of sight and typically have a range of 5 to 6 miles. Increasing the transmitter's height (by climbing on top of something high or using an external antenna) can increase their effective range.
    Have fun!
