Thread: SHERIFF JOE ARPAIO Laying Down the Law

FOR THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO, HE IS THE MARICOPA ARIZONA COUNTY SHERIFF AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER.
THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:
Sheriff Joe Arpaio (in Arizona) who created the "tent city jail":
He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them. He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights. Cut off all but "G" movies. He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects. Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination. He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again only let in the Disney channel and the weather channel. When asked why the weather channel he replied, so they will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs. He cut off coffee since it has zero nutritional value. When the inmates complained, he told them, "This isn't the Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back." He bought Newt Gingrich' lecture series on videotape that he pipes into the jails. When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.
    More on the Arizona Sheriff:
With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just set a new record), the Associated Press reports: About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts. On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees inside the week before. Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their chests and dripped down to their pink socks. "It feels like we are in a furnace," said James Zanzot, an inmate who has lived in the tents for 1 = years. "It's inhumane."
Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: "It's 120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to wear full battle gear, but they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your damned mouths!"
Way to go, Sheriff! Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders. Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.
Sheriff Joe was just reelected Sheriff in Maricopa County, Arizona.
    Way to go Sheriff Joe.

sheriff Joe a egotistic/selfserving maniac that needs to GO!!!!!!!!!!!!
he seems to not know the difference between
Humilitation and Rehabilation, he has the highest repeat offender rate in the nation, proving his bullsh^t don't work.
I am not saying criminals should have it easy or be pampered in anyway, but they should be rehabilitated and taught a skill so they can have the chance to "rise above" when their time has been served and all Sheriff Joe does is use these people to get his face on camera. http://www.lasvegas***boats.com/iB_h...s/asshole2.gif

I have experienced Sheriff Joe's "Hotel" first hand... about 1995 to 1999 off and on. My "return" rate was about every 3 to 6 months. I would be there for 5 to 45 days at a time.
As I have posted before... I'am not that person any more and am working on 6 years Clean and sober from All Street Drugs. But "Joe's Hotel" had nothing to do with the soberity(sp).. It was the stay in the State Facility that cleaned me up.
Joe had some good ideas at the start but he lacked in the follow through of the plan. They offer all these rehab programs, but are only avail to those that have been there or will be there for more than 12 months.
The food sucks and the comditions are poor at best. If it rains and you have a top bunk... you are soaked... When it's HOT. It's HOT.
Glad to be out and away from all that but Joe could do some more for those with that ugly Monkey on thier back.
    my .02
    Peace

Interesting point of view. Do you know someone in
    his jail or something?
I am a fan of his work and will continue to support him.
Although 120 in a tent sucks, but he has a good point about
    our soldiers.

Keithb87, thanks for the perspective and congratulations on 6yrs!
Programs do help folks get off the stuff and perhaps his plan could incorporate them in a little earlier than a 12 mo stay....
I think people in general get fed up when hard core, violent prisoners receive a hotel type stay. He has done a lot to combat that part, yes, perhaps going too far in some instances.
I have to agree with WW on the soldier comment, there is a lot to that statement.

I agree completly that the Soldiers in our Armed Forces have it a lot worse than any inmate in Arizona.
But the "Hardened Criminals" the ones that do the real bad things are not in County Jail, they are in a State or Federal facility where they do recieve the Resort treatment.
My crimes were all Drug related. so I was on a minimum security yard for my 12 month vacation. We all slept in Tents(with swamp coolers) and we all had access to basic cable or our T.V's The food and conditions were much better.
Any way. Joe's actions were probally started with good intentions but he did not follow through once his base was established.
