will the stuff I already have for a 454 (motor mounts, pto shaft,exhaust) fit????
Just reread your comment, what I meant was that I was looking for a buildable motor, I do my own building (always done small blocks though)
OH. I may have misread, it looked like you needed a builder. That is a good solid base for building any motor you want. You just have to keep in mind the tall-deck for accessories. Intake, distributor. They were plenty thick for doing truck duty.

Yup
396
looks like my Tahiti is going to have a 427 based motor. Anyone have any suggestions on where to get a good rebuild kit for it, I dont think Summit carries anything for tall blocks.
A good person to get in touch with regarding the parts you need, and suggestions on the configuration to build, would be "Infomaniac". You can find him in "Gear Heads". Take a look at his buildup of a 496 in the"Reverend Williams Engine Project" thread. If it were me, I'd be looking to go with the 1/4" stroker for a 482(.030" over) or 496(.060 over). Take full advantage of the tall deck.
just save yourself a bunch of time and buy Jet Hydro's motor
wish I could but, cant dole out taht kind of cash right now in 1 lump and I promissed the wife that this would be about a year long build up that she could help with. She wants to learn about motors and Im not about to stop her
All the more reason to go big, if she is involved. Do check with someone about the parts combo. I don't the truck configuration(pistons and rods) will be the best choice. Try to do it in such a way that you leave yourself the ability to go with a stroker later without buying all new stuff. You do know that you can drop a 454 crank in there, right? 454 and 427 have the same bore but different stroke.

Do tell...Im not very familiar with the 427
396= 4.094" bore with 3.76" stroke
427= 4.250" bore with 3.76" stroke
454= 4.250" bore with 4.00" stroke
Essentially the 454 is just a stroked 427.
May have to do some clearancing, but someone like Infomaniac could help you with that info.
There are a couple of good books on the Big Block Chevy out there. Probably find them at "Barnes and Noble" or any other big bookstore chain.
